A prayer of Isaac of Syria

lovemuffin

τὸν ἄρτον τοῦ ἔρωτος
The flood of Christ’s mysteries
presses upon my mind
like the waves of the sea.
I wanted to be silent before them, and not speak
but they proved to be like burning fire
kindled in my bones.
My mind rebukes me, revealing my sins.
Your mystery stupefies me,
but urges me on beyond it:
In silence it indicates to me
‘Do not be slow to approach
because of fear of your sins, O sinner
For it is by meditating upon this
that the dust of sin
will be shaken off your mind.’

O Mystery exalted beyond every word,
and beyond silence
who became human to renew us
by means of voluntary union with the flesh,
reveal to me the path
by which I may be raised up to your mysteries
traveling along a course, clear and tranquil.
Gather my mind into the silence of prayer
so that all my wandering thoughts
may be silenced within me
during that luminous converse
of supplication and mystery-filled wonder
