So, yesterday I went out for lunch and afterwards decided to try my luck at playing video slots. My intended destination was a pub that I often visit, yet the flow of traffic thwarted that plan, and I found myself driving the opposite direction, stopping at another establishment which I know.

I fed the slot machine a twenty and was soon up by over $200.00. I told myself that I would keep playing until I was down to an even two hundred dollars and then cash out. To my surprise, I was soon over $400.00 and kept playing until I was down to an even four hundred dollars. Feeling pretty good I called it quits and walked out that much richer.

The timing couldn't have better. I'm getting the oil changed in my car and having the tires rotated today. Also, I made a reservation for a camping trip this coming summer and charged it to my Visa.

What can I say? The Universe can be very generous.

Gambling is kinda like a pit bull: it's all fun and cute until it bites one in the ***.

I'm glad you walked out richer instead of playing until you lost money and going down the rabbit hole of playing more and more to "recoup" the losses.

There's a time to take your winnings or your losses. I took only a twenty with me yesterday. That was what I was willing to lose.

There is of course no winning when it comes to this sort of gambling. The people that program those games have the odds set so that at times, and without cheating, people will get lucky and win. When it comes to gambling those that gamble tend to remember their wins and ignore their losses. That is how they continue to lure people in.

And it can be a valid means of entertainment. If one goes in with the right attitude, and @Salty Booger seems to have it, that one is only going to spend a small amount of money that one can easily afford, a half an hour of entertainment is very possible. The problem is that some people do not have that control and believe in "luck".

I even indulge occasionally. Though at a much lower scale, though with a much larger potential pay off. When either the Powerball or Megamillions lotteries get over at least $300 million dollars I might buy a ticket. Never two, or any higher number. I know that I am going to lose. But I can have ridiculous dreams for only $2.00 bucks. And it looks like it is going to be months before I am even attempted again. Both got to record or near record amounts this year. Sadly someone else won my money:( Quite often they win my money before I even buy a ticket and have to wait the months it takes to play again.

It's important to recognize a good return on your investment. This money will keep the oil change off my visa and pay most of which I currently owe on my Visa.

As I was leaving the racetrack, I spotted a friend. "How'd you do today? " I asked. "Broke even," he said. "Good thing too. I needed the money."

That's the mentality for it. Gambling can be fun, but you have to be real about it.

My wife per the tax thing the casino provides stated the over a year period had won $86,000.
Great but had actually lost $100,000. So net loss of about $14,000 for the year. I think the slots were advertised @ 80% payout.

She remembers the excitement of the times she brought home $6000. Not so much the times she lost.

So it's not really a gamble for the casino. It is just a transfer of other people's money of which they get a cut.

Registering at a casino does have its perks. I do not think that gambling losses are tax deductible, with the sole exception of deducting from gambling winnings. Is that correct? I would sure as heck hope that we are not indirectly subsidizing casinos by making all gambling losses tax deductible.

EDIT: I am so happy when I am right at times:

Can You Claim Gambling Losses on Your Taxes? - TurboTax Tax Tips & Videos.

Gambling losses are tax deductible only from the amount of money that one has won.

In your case you would have a net zero for tax purposes since the losses above $86,000 are not deductible. Your wife still lost $14,000

But how much have you lost, over the years, before you had that win? I bet you don't keep count.

Maybe the machine could read your mind and thought to itself "Now here's someone who needs to change their oil and rotate their tires, and I feel sorry for their car."

Hmm. So, in the past, you never gambled and lost at either of these places that you seem to know so well.

I only ever gambled once in my life, in a Casino on Paradise Island in Nassau, Bahamas. Not being a gambler, I decided I could spend $300, just for the entertainment value, and I put that money in my left pants pocket. During the 4 hours I was there, I spend money from my left pocket, and anything I won, went into my right pocket. I left the casino that night with a little over $350. Not a big win, but really, since I had decided I'd spend $300 anyways, a pretty good even, all told.
