Well, in certain parts of the world where there is a long response time for police, you might need a semi automatic weapon.

    From a WaPo article:

"The gunman who killed four people at a Tulsa hospital on Wednesday blamed a doctor at the facility for ongoing pain after back surgery and vowed to kill him and anyone who got in his way, police said Thursday. Tulsa Police Chief Wendell Franklin told reporters that Michael Louis bought an AR-15-style weapon about an hour before the attack, killing St. Francis Hospital doctors Preston Phillips and Stephanie Husen. Two other victims were identified as William Love, a patient, and Amanda Glenn, a receptionist."

Ban assault weapons? Please allow me to speak for the Republicans. This isn't a gun problem. It's a dorsal (back) health issue, and the solution is to arm all of the nurses and limit ingress into and egress out of hospitals to one door for visitors, staff, ambulances, and deliveries such as clean linens, not limiting easy access of military weapons to these well-regulated militias.

Hardly anybody needs a semi auto, a non semi auto firearm should suffice. A pump action shotgun blast in an intruder's leg is enough firepower to defend yourself

Many newspapers and other media have a policy to not publish the names of shooters. WaPo obviously not. Can we make it a RF policy to edit out names from media who don't follow the code? Not as a rule but as a suggestion?

Entirely true. Too bad so many people don't realize it, or are too obstinate to leave meat behind, or look at it as some infringement on their "rights" to even suggest that not eating so much meat might actually be good for them, and helps our world in a lot of other ways as well. I mean... you don't even have to literally request/ask that someone stop eating meat to get a nearly irrational response about how wrong it is to curtail people's rights in such a way. All you have to do is state the facts and meat-eaters fly off the handle. Kind of a lot like the gun-rights advocates. So good on you for making the entirely applicable analogy.

My bad, I should have quoted Wikipedia regarding semi-auto firearms instead of me quoting Wikipedia regarding semi-auto pistols.

Even if semi-automatic weapons are banned, I can see potential for modifications that are technically not semi-automatic, but would still permit rapid fire. For example, in the Westerns, cowboys can get off quite a few rounds with their lever-action Winchester rifles.

I think the only effective solution is to require 6 months of psychotherapy prior to gun ownership and an annual psychological assessment during every year of gun ownership.

As we see in Ukraine, one never knows when
circumstances might turn one into a soldier.
Also, for self defense, a semi-auto handgun
is a more natural pointer than a revolver.
And it has a slimmer profile, which is useful
    for concealment.
But I prefer single shot rifles above all others.
(Less monkey motion. More elegant &
    conducive to accuracy.)

If I were a criminally minded person, I could very well make a 3-d printed semi-auto firearm, but I doubt most people have the means or motivation to manufacture a 3-D printed semi-auto firearm,

I'm thinking along the lines of manufacturers modifying their designs to allow quick reload that is not semi-automatic. For example, instead of using discharge gas to automatically reload, a CO2 cartridge could be used with a button separate from trigger is used to reload. Still have to manually press a button to reload, but it still as easy as pressing a button. And of course lever-action reload.

I figure there are too many semi-auto weapons to be confiscated and melted down. I'd like extensive background checks of prospective semi auto firearm purchasers, Those found to be violent criminals or mentally deranged, would be legally prohibited from possessing any firearms. I'd also want a ban on the manufacturing or imports of semi-auto weapons, save those made strictly for the military or law enforcement,

So to save lives you will start a civil war and get millions killed.

how does that make any sense?

They haven't run amok yet and are less likely to do so. Just make them sell their guns to the government if they want to sell.

And apparently great for killing children and doctors.

    For target shooting of course...
