33:33 "And stay quietly in your houses, and make not a dazzling display, like that of the former Times of Ignorance; and establish regular Prayer, and give regular Charity; and obey God and His Apostle. And God only wishes to remove all abomination f rom you, ye members of the Family, and to make you pure and spotless."

Dismissive interpretation: only applies to the wives of the prophet.

Oppressive interpretation: women should not be seen (no matter what they're wearing) outside - it corrupts the faith of men. Some scholars say that literally, it's bad to have women walking around. Some also derive from this that women should speak quietly.

What about Ali being part of the Ahlul Bayt this verse speaks of? Was it his faith to be forced to live like a woman? As far as I know he didn't obey if that was it.

I have heard there is a book written about this verse, or at least the topic in it would be surrounding this verse. If anyone knows of such a book I would like to hear of it.

    As Salaam Alaikum:

I'm American and have worked all my life and done my best to be honorable and modest. I think that men should take responsibility for their own conduct. It is bad enough for women that I stay inside after dark, and am careful of where I go alone. I have no family to escort me anywhere. That is the best I can do.

Wives didn't have to say in their houses all day, what it meant, is remain living in the houses of the Prophet and do not divorce, that is it means the previous verses were not meant to say go ahead and divorce and do what you want, it meant if you really adequate on dunya then divorce, but Allah (swt) is encouraging to stay with the Prophet and that is what is meant by "stay in your houses".

As for Ahlulbayt, can you tell me why the verse after didn't remain on male plural if Ahlulbayt was addressed to the wives?
