    Something from Nothing

We've evolved all kinds of things, maybe from nothing or maybe not. Consciousness just seems weird because we use it to think about consciousness. No way around that.

    Atheism produces little hope

I have to say, when I read your Shintoism post I came away with the definite impression you were mocking it. Probably my fault though. Sounds low. How much of China is atheist? Also, in large parts of the world, admitting to being an atheist ranges from being an inadvisable to a horrible idea...

Why don't Catholics read the Bible?

I've been living in Taiwan, so things have been somewhat different. We've almost totally mostly gone "without," but with the odd input from my wife here and there. No angst, either way. My older daughter has moved to the US already, and after an almost totally secular childhood in the secular...

    romans

I've read that the Judeans agreed to pray for the Emperor in their temple on certain occasions, thus satisfying the Roman need for respect and maintaining the peace.

    Thank You Donald Trump

Wait is that what I said, not to mention what the woman said? You've neglected to mention a key detail.

Why don't Catholics read the Bible?

Many Sundays. I was a kid. I mostly tuned it out. I may well have done the same if I was given a bible to read, but I did find the bible an interesting topic in high school. By then I was rapidly stopping attending mass. I haven't been back since, minus the odd ceremony of course.

    Thank You Donald Trump

Woman's explanation in the second video sounds totally plausible. What the hell, I might call the cops if I saw strange people coming out of a neighbors house. Maybe they should try to get all the facts before they try to "hold her accountable" blah blah. Pretty sickening really.

Why don't Catholics read the Bible?

Yep. For eight years I didn't see a Bible, except my Nana's old one when we wanted to write a name in the page in front after a confirmation or something. The Catechism was an effective tool of indoctrination. Math, Science, English, and Religion. The Jesuits in my high school brought out the...

A Challenge to Atheists from Answers in Genesis

Why is it always "pond scum", as in "merely rearranged pond scum"? Can't we be rearranged butterfly scales, or the fruit of a rich, dark potting soil? "all you have to look forward to is … death"... I don't know, I'm kind of looking forward to the Caps finishing Tampa Bay off.

How hard do you have to try to be an atheist?

Cheers, and likewise! I'll stand on what I've already said. I'm going to have a coffee--now that I think of it, you may just have something :) Have a good one.

How hard do you have to try to be an atheist?

There you go. The core of our disagreement has been reached :) Not much I can say about that, except that I see it the other way. One thing that occurs to me is that this is the only world we know in a massive universe. It's pretty cool for us that we're here and can do those awesome things...

How hard do you have to try to be an atheist?

And you seem to believe that a God who was able and willing to do all those things just came out of nothing, at random, for no apparent reason (except to do those things for us!).... We're in the same boat there. You just have an extra step that I guess makes it easier for you to understand...

How hard do you have to try to be an atheist?

I could possibly be a theist, but I'd have to have some positive reasons to believe. What you've said in this thread seems to boil down to "I don't understand why this is, so God".

How hard do you have to try to be an atheist?

You mentioned a whole lot of beliefs there. Why would any of them be true, any more than we would have a sun or have evolved from apes? All I'm saying is I don't see why it would be harder to be an atheist than a theist. In the end, you have to believe more things to be a theist :)

How hard do you have to try to be an atheist?

Why does God exist, with the perfect form, disposition etc. to do all these amazing things for us? Doesn't that question trouble you equally? All of your questions above pale in comparison next to one--why is matter and the universe here at all? I don't know (and there are a lot of things I...

If China has multiple languages then why do Chinese students in the West converse in Mandarin?

People of more recent generations grew up speaking Mandarin in school, hearing it on TV etc. Mandarin really is "their own language" in most cases, and they'll be entirely comfortable speaking it to each other. English on the contrary will be a foreign language to them, though they may have more...

"Why Did God Create Mankind if He Knew Man Would Sin?"

I expect my omniscient entities to know such things :) Especially about their own new creations, not to mention crafty and potentially damaging malignant actors! Well, I guess I've said everything I can really say about it, and I'll stand on my previous posts.

"Why Did God Create Mankind if He Knew Man Would Sin?"

I'm fine here if you are! I mean, when he created us I presume he had a conception for our character, created us deliberately in that fashion, and didn't just create a new random type of sapient hominid. That is relevant because it means he should have known we were fully capable of pulling off...
