The Catholic Church should be shut down

I've read a lot of the posts on here several times and some of them make me feel sick. I have worked for several organisations who have stamped down hard on much lesser crimes than child abuse. I remember a TV company instantly sacking a manager who had stopped a diabetic going for a snack...

The Catholic Church should be shut down

And you have stated here clearly a base issue and a resolution. And if a small group of people who control the RC cannot stop maintaining this source of evil then their power base should be destroyed. That does not damage the RC as a religion, it strengths it. Maybe away from the OPs question...

The Catholic Church should be shut down

I should add to my previous post that most police forces prioritise crime investigations based on the level of the crime and the chances of conviction. I think RC qualifies on both counts.

The Catholic Church should be shut down

exchemist you seem to want to take the easy and longterm route, and while you do so will not more evils happen? The fact is that the hierachy of the RC has a system that it backs and defends, that makes the people they train likely to offend in large numbers. They apologise but never do...

The Catholic Church should be shut down

With the OP 100% Perhaps then the good supporters of the religion could be released from such burdens and move on. Weird that in the 21st century we even need to discuss such things.

RNA Editing of Octopus Linked to Alien Life!

Milton that just seems too bigger a step for me. Everything I read and listen to seems to describe cell creation in logical steps, and then magically rna, and bob's your uncle. My gut feeling says we need more than a certain condition. rna just looks too complicated to have come out of a mix...

RNA Editing of Octopus Linked to Alien Life!

I think the question is: What was there before RNA? Once we have RNA I see no problem arriving at man - eventually o_O. The difficulty with the former is that to date we haven't found it, and in truth we are not totally sure what we are looking for, and it seems very likely that it no longer...

RNA Editing of Octopus Linked to Alien Life!

shunyadragon I think 'overstating' is an 'understatement'. I can imagine that different forms of life exist on many planets in the universe, but these are short lived (due to supernovas, environmental damage, impacts, etc.). And they never become inquisitive about extra-terrestrial life and...

RNA Editing of Octopus Linked to Alien Life!

But to put that into context you would have to estimate the amount of life we have actually closely studied. If there have been 5 billion forms of life (happy to be corrected if that is way out) and 99% are extinct, are the missing links hidden in that group? Or possible hidden in the 50...

RNA Editing of Octopus Linked to Alien Life!

Windwalker I take your point but when an argument is wrapped with lies I cannot accept it. I fight. If we allow every crackpot to steer life on this planet, based on lies, I'm sad to say "We're doomed Cap'n". Yup I accept possibly it is already too late. I'm not against the possibility...

RNA Editing of Octopus Linked to Alien Life!

"Given that the complex sets of new genes in the Octopus may have not come solely from horizontal gene transfers or simple random mutations of existing genes or by simple duplicative expansions, [but possibly a combination of these ] it is then logical to surmise, given our current [minimal]...

RNA Editing of Octopus Linked to Alien Life!

Phantasman don't take it personally. It is just that bad science must be identified and crushed. And that is the duty of us all. If not the crackpots: flat earthers, creationists, Loch Ness Monster believers, ...... will force real science into a corner.

RNA Editing of Octopus Linked to Alien Life!

But looking at the other side of the coin, the world for half a billion years carried out countless chemical experiments. Many took place within a few microns of space and in a few minutes of time. So how many of these experiments took place over this half billion years somewhere on earth is...

Why do representatives of religions group together against atheists?

Well thanks all for your thoughts. I think I would prefer it if in debates generic topics about anything being the cause of our existance is clearly seperated from any debate relating to religions. It frustrates me that it seems impossible to discuss what was the other side of the big bang...

Why do representatives of religions group together against atheists?

Jonathon fully agree. I don't see this place as a debating platform. More a source of facts and opinion. For sure here you have to weed out the trolls but while they are repetitive they are easily recognised. Occassionally a bit of a debate breaks out but normally gets side tracked and...

Why do representatives of religions group together against atheists?

I have seen this behaviour in discussions and debates often. The question might be for example “Does God exist?”. The participants on one side will be a group of people representing various religions. On the other side will be a group of atheists. Invariably the religious will seriously...

Life, is it easy to define?

Well I’d like to offer my thanks to all who contributed from a scientific point of view. I certainly learnt a lot. Best and most interesting thread in a long while. I’d thank you through the posts but I still do not have that capability. My conclusion, there could be dozens of definitions...

If you’re practicing self improvement and community service for a better world and to help others

UA I'm doing the same thing in Spain (English for Spaniards who want to leave). Yes it is incredibly rewarding and so much fun. My spanish stepdaughter complained when I charged an unemployed young lady 60 Euros for over 35 hours tuition (in truth 30 but she insisted I took the other 30)...

If you’re practicing self improvement and community service for a better world and to help others

I try to do that but if I'm honest I do it because it gives me a great buzz. Guess that makes me rather selfish.

Life, is it easy to define?

Jumi fascinating question. I don't think there is a commonly accepted answer. And as can be seen above it can be looked at non-scientifically, and in different ways. From a scientific point of view at stage one I would define it as: Life begins when chemistry is replaced by biology. At what...
