    My official hello

I've been lurking a while, but finally signed up and made a few posts. Good day to you all. Quick background - raised a fundie baptist with a deacon dad. Grew up in christian schools (even got home schooled). I'm currently between religions and came out to my wife about my beliefs, which...

    Is Tao = consciousness?

Interesting indeed. I just started reading on Taoism, and it's been interesting. I reading the Derek Lin version.

    Too many religions

If it helps, I was in the woods a while back, and an angel appeared to me to reveal god's word. Unfortunately, no one else was around, and the people I told about it couldn't write (and didn't have a pen and paper handy anyway). Thankfully, they told some people who told some people who wrote...

    Superstition vs Faith

I think superstition can become faith. For example: Not walking under a ladder because it brings bad luck would be superstitious, assuming that, if necessary, you would walk under a ladder. You don't necessarily believe that it will, in fact, bring you bad luck. Faith, on the other hand...

    Are you saved?

This is very true. Growing up conservative, "salvation" was more of a vaccination from hell. Being of a more liberal nature now, "salvation" has nothing to do with the afterlife, but refers to being free the bondage of the everyday, which means different things to different people from...

    God created evil

I'd still like an answer to the question, because I truly am curious. Jayhawker, is your understanding that in addition to God, there was something else that has always existed? If so, what? Did it always exist outside of God? Does it currently exist, or did God "use it up" to create all...

    God created evil

Which means something existed in addition to God. Wouldn't that make it also God, so now we have 2 Gods? Or are you referring to matter simply existing along with God, and God just molded it like putty? I'm not trying to be argumentative, I actually want to now what you're referring to.

Theists (especially Christians): is this fair?

Nothing personal, but I've found in my years growing up as a fundie that Christianity thrives on taking things out of context. Comparing this to my years of growing up conservative baptist, this pretty much fits the bill.

Is this an accurate explanation of the Trinity?

What is the necessity of having the Trinity within Christianity? I see this debated alot, and I always wonder "why does it matter?" If there's one God in three persons, or three manifestations, or Jesus and the Holy Spirit are workers of God, does it somehow effect the other Christian...

    God created evil

In Genesis, it says God created everything out of nothing. By default, God HAD to create evil and allow it to exist, otherwise the opposite of good would just be nothing, as God wouldn't have created an alternative.

Why did Jesus have to die? Why does man need a sacrifice?

God did create sin and the ability to sin. God is supposed to have created everything from nothing, so in order to have free choice, He had to create the choices. If evil exists, He had to create it. If good exists, He had to create it. If God didn't create evil, or alternative choices...

Why did Jesus have to die? Why does man need a sacrifice?

Agreed. Assuming God is all-knowing and all-powerful, then God created choice, and God created Adam, and allowed Adam to choose. So, God created the problem. Then, instead of God fixing the problem, man, through his God-given ability to choose from his God-given choices, is sentenced to...

    Healthcare Act Constitutional

Sweet, so now the people that couldn't afford health care before, ... still can't afford health care. Even better, if those who couldn't afford still can't afford it, and don't buy it, they get a tax penalty, which isn't all that enforceable (no jail time, no penalty for not paying, no...

    Ex Christians

This has always bothered me. I was brought up to believe this with my conservative Baptist upbringing. The story goes God created all things, but man chose to sin because man has free will. However, God knew all along that man would fall and provided a solution to bring man back, but only if...

    Old Testament vs Jewish Scripture

Thanks. For some reason, I was thinking there was more to it.

    Old Testament vs Jewish Scripture

I was pondering this the other day, and couldn't come up with a reasonable answer. If Jesus was the fulfillment of Jewish prophecy, why did they canonize only specific parts of the Jewish scripture? Why not just include all of Jewish scripture as part of the Christian canon? Not knowing...

Christians. . . Gays & Gay marriage vs Bible

The church shouldn't be arguing about the legal "sanctity" of marriage. They should be arguing that marriage shouldn't be legally recognized at all. Legal marriage servers no purpose. If any two (or more) people want to enter into a legal relationship with each other, let them, who cares...
