I recently had an incredibly heated discussion about what I am. I define myself as an agnostic atheist; Agnostic in what I know (or lack thereof) and atheistic in my beliefs (again, lack thereof). However my friend continued to make the argument that agnosticism is the middle position between...
This isn't strictly meant to be a debate, but rather a sharing of ideas from which a discussion may arise, so that we can understand each other more. What are your reasons for believing what you do? Evidence? Faith? Divine encounter? How you were raised? Or if you don't adhere to any established...
I originally skipped over Mass effect 1, but went back and played it, and I learned that in the Mass effect universe, it appears to be the norm for humans to be atheist because of a reaction of Shepard's to a crewmate who believed in God.
It just seemed odd for a company to envision a future...
I feel I have asked this multiple times in different ways, and I always get an unclear answer. So, for those who believe with faith, why do you? Why do you choose faith over evidence? That's all, thanks for posting.
EDIT: By faith, I am referring to belief without evidence. I realize that this...
I am starting this thread as a means of discussing the concept of faith; what it is, the reasons for it, and how it compare's to a skeptic's idea of "evidence."
This is a question for theists: my fellow atheists please hold your comments until later.
What do you think atheists believe? The non-atheistic community seems to be a little confused, and so I wanted to know what you theists thought, and correct you as necessary.
Many times I see people use the argument of faith for their belief in God. I see that as completely unreasonable, but I wanted to know what people had to say.
NOTE: I erased what I originally posted here. I was incredibly vague and people got confused as by what I was asking.
Basically what the title says. I'll add my opinion then you guys can discuss.
I consider Aliens more believable for a couple of reasons.
1) Our own existence. We exist, so we are proof that life is possible. What is to say that earth is the only place where life has started?
2) Aliens...
I've been reading up on free will lately, and I'm starting to doubt we have it. Or, at least not as much as we think.
Children are born believers in God, academic claims - Telegraph
That's a link to an article describing how children are born, not believing, but prone to believing in god...
As far as I know, there are no prophecies that were completely fulfilled in the bible. Granted, I know very few prophecies.
However, so what if the prophecy came true? People seem to believe that if the prophecy came true then that God is true, and that is not necessarily true.
I have two...
I've researched pantheism, but still do not quite understand it. I was hoping to have a pantheist describe what it is they believe.
From what I've seen, pantheism believes that nature and God are the same. Does that mean that God is synonomus with nature and thus abides by the rules of...
I am simply going to use this thread as a means to discuss the existence of God with anyone. I am constantly discussing this with people, and feel I should have a main thread to post on.
If anyone wishes to argue that god (or whatever deity you believe in) is true, I have questions ready...
I've never heard of a name for the debate over the existence of God or some higher power or deity. I've heard "The Debate of God" and "The debate against God" but those are lame, and the latter only seems good for atheists to use.
I feel a name is needed for use in conversation so people...
It seems like the "neutral position" regarding god is something that seems to be very controversial. It is also something I feel is very important in the debate.
I see the neutral position as atheism. Many people argue and say agnostic is, but this is my reasoning:
Atheism is not a claim...
Hello. I am an atheist wishing to have a debate about the existence of God with those who believe in him. However, this forum does not need to be limited to the Abrahamic Gods of Judaism, Islam, and Christianity.
To start this off, I would like to know why you (the believer) believe in God...
I feel as though the whole debate over God has been going the wrong way. Atheists many times give reasons why religions make no sense. Theists many times try and come up with scientific evidence for god. They work occasionaly, but I feel they aren't the correct ways of going about this.
I...
I've heard from several places that people do not trust the theories of evolution and the Big Bang based on lack of evidence and contradictions. Would anyone mind clarifying what these contradictions are?
I ask because I feel this would make for a good debate thread. Not a Troll thread, but a...
Hey, I'm an atheist. If that didn't turn you away immediatley, thank you.
I wish to discuss any inconsistancies people have found in science and thus find it unreliable. Perhaps what you thought was an inconsistancy was really a misunderstanding. Perhaps science does have some major flaws that...
I've never really discussed the topic of religion with anyone and wanted to talk with anyone about why they believe in whatever they believe. I call myself an atheist, but I guess i'm more excepting of the faith concept than others. I guess I'm somewhat agnostic. Anyway, I'm open to...
