    Christmas services... bah humbug!

Ours is being called a holiday service, so I am not sure what it will entail. I know we will have a yule log. I like the practice of Chalica. This was my first year actively doing it and I really found it to be both refreshing and uplifting. Peace, Seeker

    Water Communion

We had a water communion last week. I always enjoy it. The difference is we never stop having services. From what I have seen, that is something done mostly in New England and the East Coast. Peace, Seeker

My Chalice lighting altar! Do you have a home Chalice?

I have a chalice at home that I light when I meditate or just when I want to have a sense of peace or continuity. I have always had a thing for flames of some sort: candles, lamps, etc., so having a flaming chalice seemed a natural thing to do.:camp: Peace, Seeker

UU Identity (and who in the Spirit of Life's name am I?)

I attended GA this past June and found exactly what you described. There were many sub-groups in the exhibit hall. But we all came together in the big auditorium for communal services. It was a wonderful experience. As for how we describe Unitarian Universalism, I think it is important to...

    UUs protesting in Arizona

I have to agree, it was an incredible experience and I feel very fortunate to have been able to take part in the protest - and the Justice GA. Seeker

    Anyone a CUUPS member?

We are forming a CUUPS chapter at my fellowship. :camp: I am very excited about it because I think it will afford us the opportunity to expand our outreach into what is a very socially and politically conservative area. Anyone else belong to a CUUPS Chapter at their local UU church...

    First service

Wow, you have convinced me I should read that book. Thanks for the heads up. Seeker

    First service

Having been brought up Catholic, I can fully understand you issues and concerns with its dogma. As a UU, I had to learn a completely different style of belief - not one that was imposed, but one which I searched out myself, and continue to search out. Perhaps, in a nutshell, that is the...

    UU Principles: Set in Stone?

I would have to agree with you. I also have seen enough to know that there are sociopaths out there. But, most people have some good in them. So, I guess I would probably say I believe in a person's worth and dignity until they show me they don't have it. I hope that makes some kind of...

    UU Principles: Set in Stone?

I agree with Jonathan. The principles are guides, and imperfect ones. My spirituality is Wiccan and I am a UU. There are points where these two faith communities diverge and that is fine as long as I am content with following my spiritual path. That doesn't mean I consider myself any less...

    Burning Bowl Ceremony

Hmm, let's see. First, everyone in the congregation who was there that day participated, so I guess you could say 100 percent of those present, except the children, who were sent off to children's RE at the time. I am not sure what you mean by "worked for me." Did I find it uplifting and...

    Burning Bowl Ceremony

Actually, we conduct this ceremony in our UU congregation, or at least, we did this year. People in the congregation write things on a slip of paper they want to rid their lives of, like negativity, or whatever they are unhappy about, and then the slips of paper are collected in a bowl and...

What's the moral basis for the UUs?

Now you really sound Buddhist. The way I understand it, the final Chakra, where one reaches enlightenment is the abandonment of idealogies, including the concept of God. Unitarian Universalists are indeed a religion, albeit one those who practice more orthodox beliefs have a hard time...

    Beacon Press bias?

    UU Salad Bar

Christian, because I was raised Catholic and it did have its influences on me. Neopaganism, because I find the teachings on interdependence of all things and the incorporation of beliefs into all aspects of life match what I have believed all along. When people ask, though, I gladly tell...

    UU weddings

If you have a minister at your congregation, I would ask him or her what particulars they are comfortable with. We are lay led, meaning none of us is ordained or can perform a marriage, per se. The last wedding at my congregation was Wiccan and was conducted by the high priestess of a...

    Right-Wing UUs

I think if we ostracize anyone in our congregations we risk becoming like the far-right Christians, Muslims, etc., with whom many of us have have difficulties. We need the social discourse and varying ideas that run the gamut to hone our own beliefs and opinions. Politically, I cannot find any...

    Beacon Press bias?

I think you may be confusing book publishers and news organizations. Reporters and their respective news agencies, were supposed to be unbiased and neutral. I know that is the ideal and not the norm, but that is another topic. Book publishers can pick and choose what they wish to publish. In...

    Which Comes First?

I understand the confusion, Antiochan. I also am a UU and a Wiccan. Matter of fact, I belong to a coven as well as a UU congregation. I find they complement each other very well. The high priestess of our coven was the guest speaker during our UU service last week. She conducted a mini...

    My decision

Hey Matthew, Congratulations on your decision. I remember taking that step with a bit of trepidation, mostly because I had not been a part of any religious community for many years. I have never regretted my decision, in fact, my enthusiasm for Unitarian Universalism continues to grow...
