Hi all. I no longer participate in this forum but thought I'd pop in with something of interest.
Rebecca Goldstein's new book entitled "36 Arguments for the Existence of God (A work of Fiction)" contains a bonus - an appendix with the actual 36 arguments for the existence of God along with her...
Okay, so let's suppose that libertarian ideals are Utopian. What is the alternative?
Is it okay to "know better" what is best for society, and to impose those ideas on everybody? Say, forced retirement savings (social security) or forced medical savings (Medicare) or banning self destructive...
An excellent point, mball. And while this reluctance to go against your doctor will always factor in, libertarian economics always has a keen eye to what motivates people. That CT with IV contrast your doctor wants you to have to see of you have a kidney stone is well north of 1000 dollars with...
No problem, Mr Sprinkles. I always expect a reasonable response from you.
One more point of fact. The credible evidence I have seen does not show that preventative medicine saves money. This has historically been expressed as an intuitive truth, but the number crunchers say it will actually...
Mr Sprinkes - I said one thing. That people are not turned away from the ED. That's all. I don't disagree with all this other stuff. And I support universal health care. I have had many conversations about this on this forum, some of them with you and with mball. I have no idea why you both are...
No, people go to the ED for non-emergencies and they are not turned away. The emergency dept that I have worked in for 15 years sees about 85% of doctor visit stuff. We don't turn people away - ever.

Mmmmm...
Acually, I've had this, it's kinda nasty.
Quebecers also put cole slaw on hamburgers (really good) and french fries on hot dogs. And lets not forget the best cheese curds on the planet.

This statement is internally conflicted. Unless, that is, you have figured out some way to provide equal access to the same healthcare without socialized medicine. Why, exactly, do you oppose it and what solution do you favor?

Agree. Consumers spending their own money means providers will have a harder sell for this test or that procedure. Individuals would be more cautious. And providers would have to compete on price. An MRI scan in Japan cost one tenth of what it does here. This using American (GE) equipment...
Called scrunchions in Newfoundland. The Wiki Lardon entry you referenced links to "Fish and Brewis" (which feature scrunchions) under "See Also". My wife whips up a big batch for all of our Newfie friends in Baton Rouge every Christmas Eve. Yum.

This is gonna sound strange, but a relative of mine (my dad's second cousin twice removed - or something like that) was on a team of food scientists working for General Mills (IIRC) that invented Bacon Bits. My family's claim to fame. :)
