My first association was to something stupid they do in the army during long treks. A sergeant will call one of the soldiers and tell him to run up to another sergeant, farther ahead and tell him "ping". Upon doing that, the other sergeant tells him to run back to the first sergeant and tell him "pong". And so this continues. Yes, literally playing ping-pong with the poor guy.
