    In many religions/philosophies, the Sun is considered as the "male" principle which is rational and outward-looking, whereas the Moon is considered "female" and introspective. Society values rationality over emotion and many people are afraid of discovering their true inner feelings, hence the preference of the Sun over the Moon.
