I use fiction/myth/narrative pretty much interchangeably, they are just the stories we tell ourselves to make meaning of the world. Stories that are not objectively true yet provide meaning to us.

It's not a criticism per se, as all societies, ideologies, worldviews and belief systems require justification, which is only possible through narrative which explains identity and why some values are more important than others.

No ancient society that I am aware of ever saw humanity as existing, it would be unimaginable to most (or perhaps more likely all?)

As to what other fictions there are, pretty much everything. Even a 'rationalist' worldview relies on subjective myths - objective truth is important, society gradually progresses with knowledge, the application of reason can solve all/most of societies ills, humans collectively are capable of rationality, believing in myths is harmful
