February 13, 2005, First Sunday in Lent

“Jesus was led into the desert by the Spirit to be tempted by the devil. He fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterward was hungry.” (Matthew 4:1-2)

READINGS:
1. Genesis 2:7-9; 3:1-7
2. Romans 5:12-19
3. Gospel of Matthew 4:1-11

REFLECTION: Lent is here. It can be a hard season. Perhaps the temptation for many is to ignore Lent. We need help to live Lent well. We need our families and our friends and parish family. Make this Lent a time of personal conversion in at least one area.

PRAYER: Lord, with your loving kindness, guide the penance we have begun. Help us to keep up our efforts with love and with sincere hearts. Amen.

FAMILY DISCUSSION/ACTIVITY:

Monday:
Time of celebration of Valentines. Do something special and loving for your family today.

Tuesday:
Be sure to place something in your home to remind the family that this is the season of Lent.

Wednesday:
Pray the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary today with the family.

Thursday:
Plan a fasting meal today and set aside food money you save for the poor.

Friday:
Today offer yourself as help to another. Call someone who is lonely or who you have been out of touch with for a time.

Saturday:
Spend time preparing for the Sunday readings, Genesis 12:1-4a, 2Timothy 1:8b-10, and Matthew 17:1-9.

PRAYER: Lord, look upon us in our weakness. We need your help and beg you to reach out and touch us with your healing power. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
