Wahhabi Justice: Rape victim's sentence increased

Smoke

Done here.
From Reuters (Saudi court orders lashes, prison for rape victim | International | Reuters):
A Saudi court has increased the sentence given to a gang rape victim to 200 lashes of the whip and six months in prison and ordered disciplinary action against her lawyer for talking to the media, the lawyer said on Friday. ...

The 19-year-old Shi'ite woman from the town of Qatif in the Eastern Province was raped by seven men in 2006. A court had originally sentenced the woman to 90 lashes and the rapists to jail terms of between 10 months and five years.

The victim's lawyer Abdul-Rahman al-Lahem told Reuters another court had increased her sentence on Wednesday to 200 lashes and six months in prison. It ordered the rapists to serve between two and nine years in jail.
The woman's offense was being in public with a man who was not a family member before she was kidnaped and raped; her sentence was increased for talking to the media.

Amazing, eh? And we complain about the human rights in other countries, but they don't have oil and U.S. Bases there.

I have no idea what you are talking about or why anyone on a religious forum would want to politicize this woman's suffering or talk about it in relation to oil and military bases.

It's not about oil or war, it's about a fellow human being who is being tortured for the mere fact she is a woman.

I wish there was a way for women in this country to help their sisters like her who are suffering under the injustices of Sharia law.

I wish N.O.W. would organize some kind of legal defense action or something for her, apply some kind of political pressure to get her released.

It is because of incidents like this women living under despotic Islamic regimes are setting themselves on fire in protest.

Disgusting.

The dogs that live over there are no further ahead socially than the days of Moses. These freaks of humanity need to get their &*^% together.

Absolutely disgusting.

Perhaps this is an unfair politicization of this story, but....

If democratic and economic strategies were to fail to stop the spread of this sort of primitive theocracy, or fail to erode it (and this is a big "if"), wouldn't that be something worth fighting for?

I have nothing but sympathy for those who are fighting bit by bit for democratic reform in the third and second world.

It is very possible that democratic reform will do nothing to prevent a government with draconian punishments.
wouldn't that be something worth fighting for?
This is a grey area. If the people of Saudi Arabia vote for a theocratic government of this style, should we intervene with force necessary?

But this is just disgusting

hm, i don't think it's a big if at all. so far everything for centuries has failed from before the Byzantine empire to present. seems like every kingdom and big world power has had a shot at it with little success.

wouldn't that be something worth fighting for?

horribly, i'd have to say yes. if there is such a thing as righteous warfare, fighting for the innocents would be it. but i'm afraid we the ppl lack the will for such protracted warfare, i really wish someone knew the answer.

saudi arabia is getting along with Usa for now. unfortunately that country is like a farm of saudi family. you know saud is a family. however they forbid stuff, they do it themselves. imo they are dictators with no conscience or mercy.

Perhaps, but to be a democrat is in my view to allow people govern themselves and this requires trust.

The longer the US supports the Saudi regime (and let's not forget this disgusting, disgraceful punishment was handed out by a regime that survives because of US support) the greater the support for radical extremists becomes. Supporting an oppressive government drives people out of the middle ground and into extremes.

But this is just disgusting

I wholeheartedly agree

Let's face it, if the Saudi people will allow themselves to be ruled by a theocratic government, there's just no helping them. Let them live in their own little desert bubble. As long as they're willing to still trade with us, I have no complaints, despite what I may think of them. This goes for any country that will allow themselves to be ruled in such a manner. Just let them rot, and maybe they'll eventually brighten up and realize that the dark ages are over.
