January 30, 2005, Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Blessed are the peacemakers they shall be called children of God. (Matthew 5:3-10)
READINGS:
1. Zephaniah 2:3, 3:12-14
2. 1Corinthians 1:26-31
3. Gospel of Matthew 5:1-12a
REFLECTION: One way to understand the meaning of a vocabulary word is to track down its antonym its opposite. We can look at the beatitudes in this way. For example, for blessed are the poor we might think, blessed are the rich, for they must be good or they wouldnt be so successful. We can develop many ways to look at and understand the beatitudes.
PRAYER: Lord, you are full of compassion and love, slow to anger and rich in mercy. May we imitate you in our love of one another. Amen.
FAMILY DISCUSSION/ACTIVITY:
Monday:
Read Matthew 5, 3-10 and reflect on the beatitudes.
Tuesday:
Starting today take one of the beatitudes and do something in prayer or works to remind you to live each beatitude.
Wednesday:
Pray the rosary with the family tonight; pray as a peacemaker for world peace.
Thursday:
Read a book or report today about a person who practiced the beatitudes.
Friday:
What beatitude would most benefit your family life today or this week?
Saturday:
Name some small way that you can show mercy to others. Mention this at the dinner table tonight.
PRAYER: Lord, you are the source of all consolation. Comfort us in our suffering and pour out your gentle mercy on a sorrowing world. Amen.
