Jesus said to them, “Come after me and I will make you fishers of men.” They immediately abandoned their nets and became his followers. (Matthew 4:19-20)

READINGS:
1. Isaiah 8: 23-9:3
2. 1Corinthians 1:10-13, 17
3. Gospel of Matthew 4:12-23

REFLECTION: What is Jesus offering when he asked his disciples to leave their nets and come follow him? He is offering them and us an alternative, something more, something other than our routine lives. He is telling us that we have meaning and purpose and importance and that what we do each day has an inner spiritual value.

PRAYER: Lord Jesus, come into our hearts and “alter” us. Take in our selfishness and let out your love. Make us more able and willing to follow you and do your work. Amen.

FAMILY DISCUSSION/ACTIVITY:

Monday:
Reflect on how you in your daily life make efforts to follow Jesus.

Tuesday:
During this month of January the Church focuses on Church Unity. Do something today in prayer or works to foster Church Unity.

Wednesday:
Pray the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary tonight with the family. Pray for all who follow the urging of God.

Thursday:
As January moves on and the winter days grow longer, plan a special family treat just to celebrate family.

Friday:
Visit today a friend or family member who is sick or shut in.

Saturday:
During these days of unity among churches, reflect on your family unity. Do something positive to heal any broken relationships.

PRAYER: Lord, as the broken bread was scattered on the mountain but was gathered up and became one, so let your church be gathered up from the four corners of the earth into your kingdom. Amen.
