Is masturbation wrong? Why/Why not? Should masturbation be taught, in sexual education, along with intercourse?

Many a time I have brought up the subject in RL, and been greeted with embarassed or accusing stares. Why? Why is there such a stigma surrounding a natural part of humanity? Are we to remain such a sexually repressed culture forever?

Masturbation is the sexual Do It Yourself method of self satisfaction. It is nothing to be ashamed of and it may be GODs way of saying you deserve a break today.

I do not understand why it is considered taboo either. Its quick, its easy and clean up is a breeze. Sort of like meditation for your body.

For those that are in a monogamous relationship, masterbating is a better alternative to cheating on the partner if the need arrives and the partner is not available. It also cuts down on the risk of catching anything.

It's not specifically condemned in the NT but lust for a woman (other than your wife) is. So I guess it depends on who you are lusting for.

I overcame masturbation before I was married due to Matthew 5:28. Now that I am married I don't need it.

Everybody here masturbates or has masturbated, I have and do, I've even seen monkeys at the zoo doing it, I've seen my dog hump a stuffed toy he has (an animal blow up doll?), it's part of our nature. It's not good or bad, it's just things we do and the more honest we are about it with our children when they start getting the urges to do it the better, of course there are appropriate times and places. I couldn't tell you why it's seems such a "taboo" topic in our culture.

Just the fact that adult bookstores and mail order houses sell millions of mechanical and electrical masturbation devices every year tells me someone is doing it let alone those that go commando (without a mechanical aid)- I just don't know.

It is nothing to be ashamed of and it may be GODs way of saying you deserve a break today

Once again You, in my opinion, have given the best answer in as few words as possible - you are of course perfectly right.

Personally I don't think it is right, but there are times when 'Ol Mother nature' does something to me, and I do, and I do regret it, and each time I say "I'll try to steer clear of masturbation, I promisse I'll try harder......."

There was a rather entertaining thread about masturbation here when I first joined RF (and I'll admit, wanting to post in that thread was one of the reasons I joined). I'll see if I can dig it out...Sunstone and I had a giggle while we were posting in it. People can be so uptight!!

As long as masturbation is consensual and takes place in the context of a warm, loving relationship with ourselves, I see nothing wrong with it. It's when we are deeply conflicted over it that problems seem to arise.

I'd have to say this is true to a point...but one has to ask whether you are ashamed of doing it because of............or whether it comes down to religious views. I don't think there would be any member of a church standing outside after services talking about it. It can be a very uptight issue when mixed with religion. To do it when you are married is taking some of yourself back from your spouse, the Bible says when we are joined together we become one. Should I ask my husband when he comes home if it was good for him too?...He'd say "what ARE you talking about"...but as someone mentioned it's better than cheating therefore commiting adultry...but there IS a big taboo thing linked with it. Like some oldies such as 'if you do it you'll go blind', or 'it'll fall off' (assuming they meant guys...lol), and there are many others...but if you look at it for just what it is as most sex acts are it's satisfying self...there are many self satisfying things we do that mean just as much to us but aren't 'taboo' so what IS the big taboo about this one?!

True , but it does have it's start in religion . Jewish actually . The way I understand the histroy is that one of the first commands the God gave man and woman was to " Go forth and multiply ". A little later on in the Bible { sorry , don't recall the person involed , someone may be able to help me out though } , a guy decides that he does want his wife to have his child , so he " spills his seed upon the ground ". God gives him heck for doing so , as he wasn't doing what Adam and Eve had been told to do . And that , to the best of my understanding , is where this all started .

No. It's a sexual act involving only yourself, so by definition, you're giving yourself consent to do it.

They might as well, because it is hands-down the safest sexual activity known. Besides, the majority of women and virtually all men masturbate, so it isn't as if not telling them is going to cease the practice.

I don't think we will. But the changes for the better sure seem to be slowing to a crawl as of late....
