I was looking out at my pond while contemplating posts in the forums last night when I noticed that almost all of the fish had gathered infront of the little pond light with what looked utter awe. I was wondering if they were seeking "the truth of the light". Of course, there were other, grumpy looking ones loitering in the background and rubbing two sticks together who had bemused expressions upon their faces. Do you think my fish were seeking some spiritual truth? And I'll pre-empt your "they're just trying to keep warm" theory, because they are cold water fish.

Do moths speak spiritual enlightenment when they wander into a bug zapper?:p

What you've noticed is the fact that fish are the most religious of all animals. They constantly have faith that the worm doesn't contain a hook.

no, i suspect the ones hanging around at the back are the superior ones who have overcome their 5 second memory loss.

I don't know about religious fish, but you do play with the question of why humans are attracted towards light and scared of the dark. Maybe the answer is in our ancestors.

:biglaugh: Aha, that explains why I keep hearing "no, seriously, come and have a look"

Hmm, didn't we evolve from fish allegedly, dragging ourselves from the mire?

How can you tell what expression a fish is making?
For some reason I voted yes.

Wouldn't that just be because we can't see in the dark and what we can't see is scary?

They were hungry for flies my friend. Flies always hang around lamps when it is dark. The fish know that and wait in front of the light for flies that come to close to the water.

I don't think so. Flies go quiet at night; here anyway. Mosquitos maybe, but then it's too cold for them to be out too. Perhaps they're just like deer in a car's headlights?

Well, I have spoken with the Kua-toa fish people who live deep in the Underdark. Their High-Preistess contends that the mighty godess Blibdoolpoolp demands monthly sacrifices of pearls, gems, and lobsters under the new moon. If she is not appeased, a great murky flood will cover the world, making things dreadfully uncomfortable.
I'm sure these pond fish where just venerating her great....uh, fishleness. :)
