I am rather dog-eared (physically & probaly a bit mentally too), and suffer from arthritis, among other ailments. I always try to be pc in saying his/her when starting threads; please could I just say 'his' in future, without upsetting you 'female guys'?

In case you're interseted; I'm in favour of 'Women's lib' when there is a need for it to stop testosteronic 'bullying'; I believe in equality, but would rather not wear out my fingers by trying not to step on any female's toes?

Is that O.K with the ladies???

Well, I am not a lady, but I will express my opinion anyway. The he/she, him/her thing is a real pain the ***, especially for a writer/proofreader such a I. I think the heads of the English departments at leading universities should get together and make some official rulings on that. Perhaps they can create new genderless words such as "shim."

Thanks Rich, but doesn't it strike you as odd that the only reply I have so far had is from a man?

Well, I'm 48 and grew up in an era when you were Mrs. or Miss and then it all changed in my late teen years to Mrs., Miss or Ms. Personally I detest Ms and never found it offensive to be called "Miss" even into my unmarried early 30's. It was just a term.

Feel free to use just "him" or just "her". I use them interchangeably and it usually has nothing to do with the actually gender. I refuse to use nongender terms....so call me un-PC.

Ah, melody, you are a breath of fresh air; if only more women were so understanding. I have had strange looks when I've opened a door from some younger women, but I am loath to loose courtesy. Equality has its drawbacks..............
P.s My wife, Marie, feels exactly as you do. I wish everyone would!
Thanks for your input

One thing I find funny about the PC "him/her" nuttiness is that it can only occur in a language that has become as analytical as English. Imagine doing it in a more inflectional language where every adjective and noun has gender? Now that would be difficult lol.

I too use he/she etc... interchangebly (inless I am writing about a specific person or gendered incident). No biggie. I also hold the door for people (many men get very confused about this) and LOVE it when people hold the door for me.

That's the way Spanish is. Every noun is either feminine or masculine. And you have to change the gender of the adjectives you use to fit the nouns. It can get pretty complicated, but in some ways it can be helpful.

I am not a lady all the time but I am all woman. You may use anything that makes you feel comfortable. My size 10 feet can handle it. Just kidding. I will not get upset if you use 'his' while posting threads. In fact, I hardly pay attention because most threads are in general and not specific about gender.

Michel...I as well, am no lady...I'm just a gal that thinks we are on a journey in life and when we hit bumps we should just say Whoops and go on. Use whatever is comfortable for you...you won't offend me at all.:)
