So, this is why articles need to be read cohesively.

The claim came from the Swiss-German newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung. From the article: "A CIA official told Newsweek that claims in the report from Swiss-German newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ) that Burns took a secret trip to Moscow in January and that there was a peace proposal put forward by the director on behalf of the White House were 'completely false.' "

True. It seems the Russians in kind reflected the same thing. Calling it, "Canard".

Kremlin calls report of Biden offering Putin part of Ukraine "canard"

Still, Newsweek carried both reports. I think it was an exclusive from my understanding.

Joe Biden Offered Vladimir Putin 20 Percent of Ukraine to End War: Report

My first thought, if true, was this is supposed to be Ukraines's decision. Not a foreign country like the US to make that decision. .
That was your "first thought?"

My first thought was the second paragraph in the linked article: 'A CIA official told Newsweek that claims in the report from Swiss-German newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ) that Burns took a secret trip to Moscow in January and that there was a peace proposal put forward by the director on behalf of the White House were "completely false."'

I take it the assumption is that such officials simply lie as a matter of habit?

I look at it as why is this being reported?

I tend to try to look at things between the lines as well. Hence more to the story and what is being alleged through the piece.

I dunno if that is true all the time, but it is speculative in general.
And that is how false news and conspiracy theories are grown and distributed. Speculate, write it up as if it's true, and wait. There's nothing easier than finding willing believers (of pretty much anything and everything) among humans.

I was just trying to make the point that no country should have to give up land to an invading power. Should we give up Virginia, south and North Carolina if the get invaded by Africa?
That's why Canada doesn't attack the U.S. We don't want any of it at all -- too many guns and nut-bar politicians.

We'd have to give up the land
to Indians though...not that
country, Africa.

The OP article is misleading, so please read it thoroughly.
Canada doesn’t “attack” because Canada knows exactly what would happen if they tried.
Hey, just remember that it was Canadians that gave us donuts!

Because he launched an invasion of agression.

I am not defending him.
But I do understand there was a war in Donbas prior to the invasion (or special military operation as they call it.)
So he didn't invade Ukraine just like that.

Europe wants peace. No matter the cost.
