Three Chinese balloons over US during Trump's regime

We Never Know

No Slack
Yes, and it would be less precise once somebody put a hole in it. Something the size of three buses falling from 60 000 feet, with a hole in it would be very unpredictable. That is why they had to wait till it was over water.

To my understanding the pay load disconnected from it when it was shot.

I don't get the spy balloon thing when there are satellites that can zoom down and count the hairs on a gnats butt.
With that in mind, maybe this thing isn’t as big a deal as the media is making it out to be. And maybe the Republicans are criticizing Biden over nothing, and maybe Biden had it shot down just to look tough and score political points. Maybe if this had not been noticed by civilians and played in the news the U.S. government would not have cared. Maybe surveillance balloons like this fly over all the time, and it isn’t a big deal. Maybe.

Ah… the WhataboutTrumpism strat. How completely predictable.
Dude! Trump and his cronies tried to make a big deal about this. That the same thing happened under Trump shows that they should have been going after Trump if it is a real problem. You can't have it both ways. Either your party screwed up in going after the Democrats for this and since Trump appears to be clueless about it happening three times under his administration which actually makes it worse.

Face facts, your party screwed the pooch big time again.

I certainly hope not executed.
It's happens there. It's a reason I openly ridicule claims that mask mandates made us like China or Russia. No, it doesn't. You can be killed for disobedience and actively defying the state in such ways.
This kind of embarrassment? Probably not executed but the consequences may be harsh and severe never the less.

“Your party”?

I only see you attacking the Democrats and supporting the Republicans.
Yes, and my onslaught continues. Sadly, I have noticed nothing from you, ever.

People sometimes embrace the delusion that just because someone is not “Left”, that they must be a Republican… or vice versa. I find it… so limiting… to confine myself to the ideology of one particular party. I guess it is just the Nature of some people to follow. Not mine. It is true that I prefer the Republicans’ perspectives over the Democrats, absolutely… but I will always understand that my own views are superior in every way, to those of both these parties.

I have seen your views and most of them are inferior. But fool yourself however you want to. I do not identify with either party. In the past I supported the Republicans rather strongly, but they went off the deep end. I had to put on my big boy pants and support the Democrats.

Few have the Natural inclination and sense of purpose to wander off into the darkness and light their own fires along the way. I do not expect many to resonate with my Weltanschauung… especially those whose Nature it is to follow. I do not hold it against them, any more than I would a domesticated animal performing as it was trained to perform, or a machine operating as it was programmed to operate.

You only dream that you accomplish things on your own. It is a rather immature belief.

One person expressed worry to me that the balloon was really carrying some sort of poison that would be released when shot down.
There are two stories I've seen doing the rounds. One is that its power source may be a thermoelectric generator, in which a radioisotope that gets hot due to radioactivity provides heat to a thermocouple array to generate electricity. Plutonium 238 is often used in such devices. That would account for not wanting to bring it down on land but in shallow water, where the bits can be recovered, safely and relatively undamaged, for analysis. However the pictures I've seen seem to show a solar panel array so maybe that's wrong. The other story is that it may have some limited means of self-propulsion, via some kind of thruster, which would require high energy fuel to be on board. This could be hazardous if it were shot down over land.

But "poison" as such is a mad idea.

Balloons have advantages over satellites....
- They're at much lower altitude...60,000 to 100,000 feet,
& can take higher resolution photos.
- They lack a predictable path schedule, unlike satellites,
for which the military prepares by hiding activities.
- They're cheaper.
- They're harder to spot, with only the payload being
readily visible to radar.

China's claim that they went off course strikes me as
dubious. They can steer somewhat, but they'd certainly
expect prevailing westerly to carry some of their many
balloons over N Ameristan.
