Democrat controlled San Francisco Police wants to kill people with this...

Moreover, the police department is hardly a bastion of liberalism, or even Democratic sympathies.
As usual, it's the right-wing proposing draconian policies.

Agreed.

That's not to say that we shouldn't have a long conversation about robots using lethal force-- we certainly should.

But the political spin on the issue doesn't aid the conversation at all.

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
Isn't the fear factor a major, if not primary cause of police shootings?

Your links seem to alternate between sensational predictions of killer robots running amok and factual details like remote control -- by officers.

These don't seem to be smart robots making autonomous decisions, just armed surveillance drones operated by joysticks. Inasmuch as neither the robot nor the controller a hundred feet away could claim "I was in fear for my life!' wouldn't deadly force be less likely?
I dunno. I guess they will have to first kill some baddies to find that out.

Eventually it's going to go from joystick to pure AI/machine learning at some point. That path is inevitable down the road assuming this proposal passes.

No. It's in left wing territory where this is being proposed. Not right wing territory.

William Scott is the police chief there, and from my understanding, he's a Democrat.
Is it his proposal? If so, what are his motivations, if not to reduce harm and killing?
Does he represent typical California Democrats?

I hope not. How soon before the use of force gets transferred to AI altogether?

Honestly I thought non lethal riot control AI would be used and employed first rather than jumping all the way to the lethal end of things by robotics.

I can't help but see a future policed by drones and Dr Who type 'daleks'. Or this metal fella*...

*Granted it's just a parody vid. For now...

I wonder if I'll be alive when Skynet gets called in or Robocop becomes a reality?
It seems to me the development of an armed, resentful public, and a militarized, police-surveillance state has been mostly the work of right-wing policies. The last Republican I remember warning against it was Eisenhower.

If America descends into a Fascist tyranny, I expect it will be Republican fear-mongers leading the way.

Then how come this particular thing is going on in Democrat controlled territory right now?

Jesus Christ @Twilight Hue , such ridiculous melodramatic hyperbole. The robots aren't autonomous, they're remotely controlled by the police, just like the bomb squad robots they've using for years. The only reason behind your display of spastic theatrics is because Dems were behind it. If republicans backed it, you would cheer them for "backing the blue".

Perhaps you should see a doctor about some cryosurgery on your right amygdala....

How come there are massive, liberal, street protests going on in conservative controlled Iran and Myanmar? Sometimes the political group in power has less control than they'd like.

Maybe Democrats aren't so interested in order and control as Republicans. They do tend to be less heavy-handed, don't they?

Just think, we could use them against the drug dealers, criminals and rapists invading our gentle country from the South. Now that would be something conservatives could get behind.

Some people have this mentality that republicans can do no wrong and democrats can do no right, and make mountains out of molehills or vice versa depending on the subject's political affiliation. It's entrenched tribalism with no consistent or coherent morals/principles.

Thus they were the real robots all along.

San Francisco police proposal could allow cops to kill suspects with robots

Robots in San Francisco could be allowed to use ‘deadly force’

San Francisco may let police robots use lethal force

If this proposal ever passess, it's officially started folks. Land of the free..err..hunted.

Let the Democrats show they're not an authoritarian party by killing this proposal instead of people instead.

Thoughts on Police wanting to use robots to fearlessly hunt down and kill civilian baddies?

I predicted tech and Ai will eventually create a dystopian society. This is just the first step.

I wonder if the proposal includes air drone executions as well as land robotics?

@Revoltingest this may be of interest to you in particular.

What you need is to arm more people, have more guns, then they can shoot the robots easier.
