That’s what I said. Der die das….blah blah blah. I thought Germans were supposed to be efficient. Use one “the” word, dammit! Plus, would we be using the ‘fuss’ or the ‘fenster’ part of the word as the determinant, or does the creation of a new word warrant it’s own ‘the’ word?
What about Zehenklingel? Or is that too risqué?

Since a new word is usually a compound of already known words it uses one of their articles.
In this case it's the one of Fenster.

Der Fuß
Compare it to "Kellerfenster".
Basement window.
It's "das Kellerfenster" because the defining word is Fenster and not Keller.
If it was Keller it'd be "der Kellerfenster".
I can't even explain it because as a native speaker you simply know the right answer.
Actual dissent only exists with entirely newly created words like "Nutella".
For me everything that isn't "das Nutella" sounds completely horrendous but for others it's "der Nutella" and they are mentally handicapped and need to be taken care of.
