Fellow Westerners who use bidets

I'm just curious. Those of you that live in areas where bidets are commonplace, what is the etiquette in using the facilities in another's home? Is one generally welcome to use the bidet in another's home? Given the culture I was raised, I would definitely hesitate. To me, it would be akin to drying my hands on a towel hanging in the bathroom after washing my hands.

I sincerely have never lived in somebody else's house. In Italy...I mean.
But I did host friends from other cities.
Yes...thet did use the facilities.

Here in Brazil, the bidet has completely fallen out of fashion. You will have a really hard time finding one. What many people use is what we call: hygienic shower. It is essentially a hose standing next to the toilet.

If I buy my own house in the West, the first thing I will likely do is attach a hose with sprayer to the toilet. Those particular devices are obviously a lot easier to use than a bidet.

Odd. Bidets sre in just about every private bathroom in France but not public ones. First bidet i used eas in France but i have only seen one in Italy but have never stayed in a modern building in Italy.

I don't recall if I've ever seen a bidet in my entire life. I've never used one. I'm not even sure if I'd know how.

This is what a real bathroom should look like

Light years away from what I have experienced in Northern France...and I hear that Britain is pretty similar...as for plumbing...:p
you can imagine it.
We use a French word, bidet to use something that most French don't use ..

PS. Bidet is for washing genitals too.

Bought our first one at the beginning of covid and the shortage of toilet tissue. Replace it after one or two years. Best thing we ever did. Not to be confused with the photos, this is a small device that hooks on the inside of the bowl.

In Japan they have it too, I guess.

I often wonder what etiquette dictates when one goes into a house that requests no shoes, but the person came in not wearing any...

When I lived in ashrams (1970s/80s), a motto, for visitors, was please leave your shoes and mind outside.
No shoes was fine.

I think what's funny about that picture is that there's a toilet brush and a container of Comet in there. It's like someone might have had plans to clean it, and then looked at it and said "forget it."

Yup, I know how that goes...

They were once so common in French hotels now they seem rare except probably the expensive ones that I never stay at.

I was raised not to wear shoes in the house. Shoes in my life are for walking outside the house. I'm an American, by the way.
I was raised to wear shoes in the house.
But later I became civilized....almost.
Now we're a no shoe house family.

Australians have bidets.

But the Japanese have really perfected the #2 function....

Wow! New posts in this old thread.

For many months now, I've not made one tp purchase. All that I need is a large bottle of water and a pack of wet wipes near my toilet. Don't worry, I have hand soap and sanitizer.
