I've heard many say male and some say female.

If the god is female, why is it said man was created first?

Edit...

Genesis 1:27: “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”

God is omnigendered and genderfluid. *grin* God also became trans when he fashioned a body for himself that was not sexless as he was.

Seiously tho, Yahweh is both feminine and masculine declination, and both nouns and verbs are gendered in Hebrew. Gender isn't just what you are, its something you do. So when God is being the husband of Israel, father to mankind and king leader, there are male verbs male pronouns. But these become absent when talking about creating, and even divine presence. (Shekhinah, feminine.)

Far from being progressive though, this likely served to cement separation of male and female gender role expectations. Which aren't cool.
(Also probably had a lot to do with inspiration from similar androgynous Mesopotamian gods, like a lot of scripture. But that's another topic.)

This is largely lost in Christianity which honestly has a much more cut and dried and above all else, English approach to scripture.

So is the *biblical* God male or female? Complicated.

Is the Christian God male or female? Unequivocally male, because they only use He/Him pronouns despite God being a sexless spirit up until he fashioned a male body for himself... *cough* I digress.

Which of the Christian (biblical) gods?

At least El, the creator god from Genesis, is not (only) male.
"God" is a gender neutral word to me, I refer to "god" as "it". Named gods, who have a traditional sex get gender pronouns.

He is not biologically male and he is not biologically female

But I think he identifies as male

I think he identifies with a gender so as to make him more relatable, to make him more human

He is therefore both "male'" and "???" - he is ??? presenting as male!

Jesus calls Him the Father. I think that strongly suggests that He is a male. But Bible tells also that God is a spirit and love. That is why I would not think God is like physical biological male.

...the Father is greater than I.
John 14:28

God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.
John 4:24

He who doesn't love doesn't know God, for God is love.
1 John 4:8

We know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and he who remains in love remains in God, and God remains in him.
1 John 4:16

Neither. God is immaterial and therefore has no body. Spirit is genderless and so is God.

I think he is occasionally referred to as Him or He, Lord is also a typical title given to men.

But I think this is more done as a way of referring to God, my own impression is that God is genderless in that regard or said in another way, it is irrelevant to him.
