Your Experience with Supplements

Have you taken any supplements to help with medical issues such as fatigue, lack of concentration, etc.? And if yes, have you noticed any improvement due to the supplements?

I've just gone back to taking omega-3 and vitamin B12 supplements because my fatigue has lately increased noticeably. I've only been back on them for a few days, so it's too early to tell what effects they'll have.

I'm interested to read about others' experiences with supplements.

Omega 3, molecularly distilled. It changed my life. I was advised by a psychologist to start taking it. For a long time it was outside of my ability to purchase, but since I began taking it my life has improved. Your own results may vary, but you have to give it several weeks to begin taking effect. I'm not sure how it helps me, but it does.

I take it twice per day, although I sometimes forget the second dose.

It depends on what is causing the fatigue. Vitamin B complex and antioxidants are great for improving circulation. I like turmeric curcumin for its anti-inflammatory properties to go with the improved circulation. And then there is coffee and tea. :)

I take B complex and extra B12 when feeling run down. Stirring a tablespoon of nutritional yeast in a glass of water or juice seems to immediately give me energy. After having covid last year I had lots and lots of hair loss, which I heard was a common occurrence in women. Thankfully, I have very thick hair, but it was getting pretty thinned out. A friend told me to try Silica, which is derived from horsetail or bamboo. It worked great. Between 1-2 weeks the hair loss stopped and within two months my hair thickness was back to normal. I use different supplements often for a variety of reasons and have done so for years. I feel they have been very beneficial. I am a senior citizen in good health, I have no serious health problems, and am not on any prescription medication.

When I was a young fellow I took protein and keratin supplements to help out at the gym which seemed to help with strength.

These days I'm old enough that a fibre supplement helps with the plumbing.

I haven't tried omega3 supplements before but I did try iron supplements once and they do help you with energy levels if your intake of red meat is low.

In my opinion.

Used to take St. John's Wort for depression/anxiety, it worked ok. Just make sure a Dr knows your taking it.

Cinnamon is a good aid for digestion. And I never noticed much from Omega-3s.

I used a lot of workout supplements while I was in the military. Proteins, pre-workouts, BCAAs. Those actually helped a lot.

Personally my fatigue is directly related to how good a night's sleep I get.

Beyond that, I'm a subscriber to ConsumerLab which tests OTC products and provides medically reviewed comments.Energy Supplements to Help Improve Energy & Decrease Fatigue | ConsumerLab.com

Besides not getting enough B-vitamins, iron and magnesium which the article discusses specific conditions might be helped by CoQ10 ashwagandha, ginsing are noted for some specific issues.

The tenor of how they report is exemplified by this:

Preliminary evidence suggests that supplementing with anhydrous enol-oxaloacetate (also called simply oxaloacetate) might modestly reduce physical and mental fatigue in patients with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), but more research is needed to confirm....While these results are promising, there was no placebo group in the study, which is needed to prove a benefit. Research on animal muscle has suggested that oxaloacetate may enhance the production of ATP within the mitochondria of the cells (Nogueira, FASEB J 2011).

I take a multivitamin every morning, i have done for many years and notice no difference until i stop taking them for any reason. Then i tire easily and wind up with continuous colds and feeling down mentally.

Following my stomach op i was advised a particular daily protein drink. Not covered by the health service and very expensive, like €46 for a weeks supply. A nutritionist friend was shocked, checked out the tin. Powered egg white and multi vitamins. So having an egg a day and a multivitamin tablet saved a lot of cash over my 6 months of recovery.

Having been signed off twenty years with depression, I've discovered the secret to good health, is putting in what we require in an organic way - Feed the body what it needs.

Everyday I have:
  • Hemp powder (amino-acids, and omega 3, 6, 9).
  • Ashwagandha powder (male aphrodisiac).
  • Macca Root powder (hormone balancer).
  • Ginseng powder (natural steroid producer - Drink plenty of water).
  • Mustard Seed (low base minerals).
  • Forest mushrooms (B12, and other brain nutrition).
  • Boots A-Z +50 Multi-Vitamins.
Plus I'm always looking for other super-herbs that help make us feel balanced... Please don't recommend Spirulina, as it looks, and tastes like Pond-Scum.

In my opinion. :innocent:

I took iron supplements for a while after going vegetarian. I made a pretty common mistake in that I overestimated the amount of protein I needed while neglecting iron. I ended up fatigued and craving eggs/meat.

The supplements definitely helped but I've since adjusted my diet and don't need them anymore.

Would you consider Kratom a supplement? I take that 3-4 days out of the week, roughly 3 grams throughout the day.

I take Nature's Plus Source of Life, which is a food based multivitamin. I take it primarily because I don't always eat right, so it supplements the shortfalls in my diet.

It has historically helped with fatigue and lethargy. As far as concentration, I really haven't noticed a difference.

That said, if these symptoms are new, and you have not changed your diet, I doubt supplements are a long term answer. Speaking with a physician and/or dietician would be advisable in such a circumstance. If you are like me, and don't eat right, a dietician should be able to point you in the right direction with which supplements would be best in picking up the slack in your diet.

I take vitamin D during the winter months because I know I don't get enough sun. I have no idea if it does any good, but it doesn't hurt.
When I do intense workouts I also take electrolytes since I exercise on a fasted state and the loss of minerals makes me dizzy and gives me headaches. That works pretty well.
I have a very healthy diet and I get the nutrients my body needs from food, but if something is out of balance, I'm okay taking supplements for a while. It can't hurt.

My husband takes melatonin for sleep and it works very well.
