New Zealand's plan to get low-income earners into hybrid and electric cars

'New Zealand's government will help pay for lower-income families to scrap their old gas guzzlers and replace them with cleaner hybrid or electric cars as part of a sweeping plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The government says it plans to spend $NZ569 million ($516 million) on the trial program as part of a larger plan that includes subsidies for businesses to reduce emissions, a switch to an entirely green bus fleet by 2035 and curb-side food-waste collection for most homes by the end of the decade.'

Looks like New Zealand is leading the way on climate change. Shame Australia is not doing it, but I suppose at least we get to learn from any teething difficulties they have in NZ by playing catch up I guess.

In my opinion.

Its a good idea to have a trial and measure the results.

The batteries in those cars will fail after a time, so it will be interesting to see if the low income earners are better off. A lot depends upon the longevity of the cars.

I have car that was made in 1995, and I plan to keep it running for at least ten more years. I can replace its battery, its engine; or I can get any number of mechanics to do it. I wouldn't be permitted to replace the batteries in an electric; and the batteries would cost almost as much as the car.

I think what will happen in New Zealand if everyone is required to switch to electrics is that nobody will own their cars, because it won't make sense to own a car which is just mostly a battery that will fail and have to be replaced.

Trials like this are a very good idea. We've got to find out the feasibility and find a good way to stop pumping carbon and to stop heating the planet.

I wish we had a government like theirs, instead of the lying, self-serving, incompetent pile of **** that is ensconced here in the UK.

We're about to have a federal election here and the two major parties seems to be like choosing between an idiot or a moron to run the country. Then there's a few minor far right parties that are so crazy you might think it's satire but unfortunately they're serious. I'm trying to find an independent in my electorate that has good ideas but they have no campaign funds to do advertising so it's next to impossible to work out what they stand for.

I was driving by an independent poster yesterday and all it said was "nothing but the truth", I thought what a waste of a poster, it literally tells you nothing about what the independent considers to be "truth".

In my opinion.

I'm sure planned obsolescence will play it's role and poor people will have a piece of junk in 8 years because they simply can't afford to keep changing out battery packs every single time at 5 figure digits $$ a pop.
