I don't see why they would be worth trying. If you are a student at a university, it more than likely provides in-house services that help students with their writing skills. These services are typically free of cost to enrolled students. Plus, they do it in a way that isn't going to risk academic dishonesty and being dismissed for plagiarism.

What do you mean by safe?
In VA US a lot of writing services are student tutors. The knowledge of essay writing differs with personality and how one tutors. Outside tutoring labs, I'm not sure of any other writing services that would have a safety factor involved.

I used an editor for my doctoral dissertation, but the editor only checked my references, checked for typos and warned me when some paragraphs were too long or not very clear. At the end I corrected everything myself, and I wrote everything myself. There is no shame in doing that, many authors write their novels, let them rest for a while and come back a few days later with a clear mind to review what they wrote. My mother was a translator and she translated her materials, let them rest for a two or three days and would go over the texts again to see if they could be improved or there was something missing or not quite right. One thing is hiring an editor to check for minor issues when it is a long piece (mine was 150 pages) and a different thing paying for a ghost writer or someone to write a simple 5K words essay, or having poor writing skills.

What's the point of going to university (especially with the costs in the USA or UK) and not doing the work? What will you learn? In my day there were no such services, except when a talented student was paid by a dim one to do the work. But what would happen when the exams came round?

The whole concept of getting some one else to stand in for you is cheating. What will an employer do when he finds out that he has employed a dunderhead. he will sack you.
