What is this new COVID variant in South Africa

South African scientists identified a new version of the coronavirus this week that they say is behind a recent spike in COVID-19 infections in Gauteng, the country’s most populous province. It’s unclear where the new variant actually arose, but it was first detected by scientists in South Africa and has now been seen in travelers to Belgium, Botswana, Hong Kong and Israel.

Health Minister Joe Phaahla said the variant was linked to an “exponential rise” of cases in the last few days, although experts are still trying to determine if the new variant is actually responsible
...
In a statement on Friday, the World Health Organization designated it as a “variant of concern,” naming it “Omicron” after a letter in the Greek alphabet.
...
Sharon Peacock, who has led genetic sequencing of COVID-19 in Britain at the University of Cambridge, said the data so far suggest the new variant has mutations “consistent with enhanced transmissibility,” but said that “the significance of many of the mutations is still not known.”

Lawrence Young, a virologist at the University of Warwick, described omicron as “the most heavily mutated version of the virus we have seen,” including potentially worrying changes never before seen all in the same virus.

When people realize new varients is the new normal, they won't be so shocked.
Covid is here to stay.

Each time that this type of thing is announced puts me ever closer to thinking Covid is being weaponized beyond doubt.
A weapon that can't be aimed or contained, with an uncontrollable blast radius?
Great weapon -- who's using it, on whom, to what end?

Apparently, whoever created and released this weapon has some sort of super duper immunity or wonder-drug to insure that they don't get affected by their own weapon. One would think that they would try to insure that their nation or compatriots don't come down with Covid also.

anna.

but mostly it's the same
@Wandering Monk 's video in this thread is factual from what we know right now.

Thanks, but it's over 27 minutes long, I'd rather read, so here's another source link:

BioNTech will know in two weeks whether current Pfizer jab is effective against Omicron variant

The company says it will know in two weeks whether its current vaccine is likely to be sufficiently effective against the B.1.1.529 variant, now named Omicron by the World Health Organization, based on lab-based experiments.

If required, BioNTech said it is poised to tweak its vaccine to match it more closely to the new variant.

“Pfizer and BioNTech have taken actions months ago to be able to adapt the mRNA vaccine within six weeks and ship initial batches within 100 days in the event of an escape variant,” the company said in a statement.

Paranoia is not logical.

What do you suggest? More lockdowns? More destroying economies? More companies using it as an excuse to Morganize? More fear and terrorizing the public? What? What will it be?
It's an existential threat, like war. If a wartime economy and mandatory restrictions, masking, vaccination &c is needed to contain it, that would probably be best, in the long run. Once we snuff out the threat with what you might see as draconian measures, we can resume our usual squabbling and exploitation, should we choose to.
If we just take half measures and let the pandemic fester, it will always be a problem; always a threat, and will evolve into who knows how many strains of varying degrees of infectiousness, morbidity, and resistance to treatment.

That's one very important point.
