I'm not familiar with the ALC history, but the ELCA is currently the more progressive synod, not anti-science, not biblical literalists, and with female pastors and open communion for baptized Christians. In some previous encounters, I have heard anti-ToE, anti deep time, biblical literalism, and opposition to ordination of women from those in the Missouri and Wisconsin synods.

I pointed to a post where quotes were made by popular theologians. That's the post I am talking about. Not the first post. For simplicity, I will post it here:

I was Catholic for a while. I saw that it was full of blatant misogyny. Women cannot become priests. Popes have spoken against women serving at the altar. Some object to altar girls, or even Eucharistic ministers. In my diocese, women can't even do readings.

Church fathers have also had some nasty things to say about women. Tertullian said that a woman is a temple built over a sewer. St. Jerome thought pregnant women were disgusting and shouldn't be allowed out in public. Clement of Alexandria said that "Every woman should be filled with shame with the thought that she is a woman." Aquinas taught that women were a genetic mistake.

I'm sorry, I mean no rudeness, I am simply pointing out how women have been viewed throughout history, especially in religion. We can partake, but only in a limited way. We can practice, but only if a man oversees it and says it's okay.

I find this highly offensive. It is entirely consistent with the historic and outdated perception of [women + hormones = instability], which has been used to limit the legal, educational, and employment opportunities of women.

Very sorry. Its physiological truth, not intended to be offensive; and if we can't talk about it then perhaps we shouldn't ever hope to tackle human trafficking. The truth is there is a hell of a lot of human trafficking even today, and that is made possible by human psychology. We're all a little bit nuts.

Its possible teenage girls go temporarily insane. I suspect I may have.

However, teenage boys also seem to, as well. Mine certainly has.

I think teenagers in general could be classified as insane... though I believe the truth is, its not really insanity. Its just a lot of change, physical and chemical in the body, and a mess of change and pressure from society at the same time...

Well, its enough to drive anyone nuts.

This is why I wrote "That was then and this is now", so some positions from the 1960's within the ALC Synod has changed and become much more liberal.

The ALC [American Lutheran Church] came mostly from Scandinavian and German settlers here in the States, but later then merged with the LCA and a couple of other synods to form the ELCA. My mother's side was Swedish, thus this is the church I was raised in.

I had thoughts about going into the ministry, and when my Catholic wife and I first got married, we went to my church, but when the problems I raised became overwhelmingly evident, we switch and started going to her local Catholic parish. However, I didn't convert until many years later.

And you are correct that the Missouri, and especially the Wisconsin Synods. are much more conservative, and we have friends in both.

But my mother, cousins, and many other women in history are religious
