We have price control policies, to some extent, and tighter controls over drug company behaviour in terms of their sales models, and flat-out bribing of doctors, etc.
Things aren't perfect here, but I'm horrified at how the American people are serviced by this industry.

Explainer: how is the price of medicine decided in Australia? (theconversation.com)

I worked in Sydney for a while, many years ago. I was impressed with all of the services provided by the government and at the time, they still had a balanced budget. Cars and luxury were pretty expensive but housing and food weren't

It was maybe 25 years ago. Don't really know what it is liked now but would have like to have stayed.

Our single payer would be the government which seems to be in the hands of the lobbyists. The cost of single payer, such as it is, is a major obstacle. Sure the POTUS has fought to open the market to generic drugs but the lawmakers seem unwilling to support them.

Just takes enough "lobbying" to keep the required number of votes from happening.
Are you from the US? The US system isn't single payer.

How can we fix this?
Allow states and other governmental agencies to bargain with Big Pharma. For example, in Canada insulin costs only around 10% of the cost here in the States, and it's mostly Big Pubs who won't sign on to government negotiations with them. After all, most of them are wealthy and elderly and who now have governmental healthcare for life, so what do they care what's possibly good for us peons?

Thus, another example of why they are not pro-life even though many claim they are.
