Are all sins equal?

We Never Know

No Slack
Are all sins equal or are some worse than others
For example the 10 commandments are..
  • I am the Lord thy God, thou shalt not have any gods before Me.” ...
  • “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.” ...
  • “Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day.” ...
  • “Honor thy father and mother.” ...
  • “Thou shalt not kill.” ...
  • “Thou shalt not commit adultery.” ...
  • “Thou shalt not steal.”
  • “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.”
  • “Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife.”
  • “Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s goods.”
Is it just as bad to lie as it is to kill?

In my opinion: no all sins are not equal. Sins against God are worse than sins against other creatures. In general I do not think it is as bad to lie as to murder but of course it depends on the circumstances. The Lord Jesus spoke of those who had a "greater sin" and St. John the Apostle spoke of there being sins that are to death and ones that are not. Moses distinguished between murder and unintentional manslaughter also for instance. The Church recognizes a distinction between mortal and venial sins (the first being damnable and the latter not being so).

I suspect the worst sin is the one(s) that you don't atone for.

You may kill someone, for whatever reason but then pay your debt, to society.
What if your lie causes someone to kill another. Knowing your lie is the cause but never atoning for what you caused.

I'll say though the first four commandments I have trouble understanding the nature of the sin.

The 10 Commandments aren't very good, are they?
If you take them one at a time ...
1. I am the Lord thy God, thou shalt not have any gods before Me.” ...
Only a jealous and insecure god would need this

2. “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.” ...
Again, why is God worried about this - get over it and tell us something useful

3. “Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day.” ...
Good grief, get over yourself.

4. “Honor thy father and mother.” ...
Great, as long as they aren't Fred & Rosemary West (UK mass murderers)

5.“Thou shalt not kill.” ...
Fair enough, you're suddenly getting serious - better tell the soldiers not to kill in battle.

6."Thou shalt not commit adultery.” ...
Good ethos, but many people have marriages that break up;and religious people are proven to be worse than non-believers

7. “Thou shalt not steal.”
Even if you are starving, don't pinch an apple off a market stall.

8. “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.”
What do you say when your wife asks, "Does my bum look big in this" - Lying isn't always wrong

9. “Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife.”
Why? I fancy other women ... I do nothing about it

10. “Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s goods.”
Coveting your neighbour's goods is the basis of modern capitalism.

And where are the commandments that say ...
A. Take immense care of and do not harm children
B. Do not keep slaves or pay them a pittance
C. Look after our planet and all things that live in it

The other sins are mendable. Fixable .
Murder is not fixable, unfortunately.

Because the person cannot come back to life.
But God's mercy is infinite.

In my understanding there are minor and major sins h¨ta¨hat can be done.
Some of the seriousness of it comes from the intention of doing the sin. Why does one do it?

According to the Tanakh and also Christian teachings, they are not equal. In regards to the latter for example, blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is referred to as being an "unforgivable sin".

I find it interesting that you have thought about them so much that you took the time to dissect them down to turn/try to turn them into something negative.

When you are constantly told how important they are ... and you are a non-believer ... you do look at them and see if you are missing something (I'm not).

I notice you only commented on the fact that I analysed them; no comment on my analysis

Your analysis is "your" way of looking at them. I haven't given them that much thought but if I did I might analyze them differently than you.

I see the opposite.
God wouldn't be harmed in the least by any sins.
But humans...we're fragile creatures, & easily damaged.

And we are becomming more fragile and easily damaged

50 years ago "sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me"

Today "OMG! Did you hear what they said? That is so offenvie and hurtful.

Would you say that murder is a sin against god, or a sin against other creatures?

In my opinion: both in different senses. The reason why I say sins against God are worse is because malice towards God more immediately separates man from his end than malice towards other creatures, and creatures (including ourselves) are not to be loved for their own sake but for God's, it is like they (including ourselves) are useful for this. So something which more directly attacks the base is worse (more damaging) than that which attacks a part.

Of course that is all based on thinking God is what things aim at but of course I'd think that.

So who is being harmed or victimized is irrelevant in this system of categorization.

So basically its worse to attack the creator than the creation?
