You know with how some folks interpret verses I would not be surprised if someone actually claimed to have found a reference to Santa in the Bible.

Some people say that Jeremiah 10:3-4 is a reference to Christmas trees.

Yes it is hard for us, especially in this modern era, to understand why the whole nation is judged for the decisions of the rulers.
I don't everybody in other nations judge the people of a nation for what the leader of a nations does. I don't. I may have some blame for them if he or she was elected fairly, but even then only some of them voted for that person. A classic example of people voting for bad reasons was when people voted for Hitler's party, though it was a minority of people that voted for him. After he ascended to a dictatorship, though, many people practically worshipped him. It was a cult.

So, if we aren’t looking at it from a literal perspective, we can look at it from a thematic perspective. If the author isn’t conveying literal history, then what is his intent? What is the theme? What is the message being conveyed through here? And if we aren’t seeing this text as divinely authored, then we can take whatever teachings and stipulations found with a grain of salt.
I think the passage becomes a condemnation of the state’s power and parallels it to God’s power. I’m not sure though.
It seems to common in the Old Testament in the historical sections to condemn for instance the nation of Israel especially for what their kings were doing, and the kings of Judea less so, though there the tendency was there, too. To me, it just seems like primitive kind of thinking that the Hebrews were embroiled in. To me religion was in it's childhood. There's an evolution that religion goes through over time. I read the historical sections, and don't wish to read them again.

He certainly knew how to manipulate the masses, as most politicians seem to do to an extent, so that they can continue to do what they want to do.
