an anarchist
Your local anarchist.
Who is you’re favorite Bible character? The Bible has a really cool plot throughout and a lot of characters are very well developed.
Joab is my favorite character. King David’s nephew and top military commander, he plays a pivotal role throughout the books of Samuel, before dying in 1 Kings.
This guy is one of the best antiheroes I have seen.
It starts with him murdering Abner. The way he does it is wicked (calling him back under the pretense of peace just to shank him). He also goes directly against David, who just secured peace with Abner. Joab’s motivation was that Abner killed his brother, so for the audience, the murder could perhaps be accepted. But then he callously helps David murder Uriah. This is revealing of his morality, helping cast him in the antihero role. During Absaloms rebellion, King David ordered his men not to kill his son Absalom. Joab killed the man brutally, which caused David to grieve. Though David’s army won, his army’s morale was shattered as they saw the king was in grief because of their victory. Joab, who just murdered his son, goes to David and tells him he better chin up and congratulate the troops, or suffer losing the entire army. When I picture that scene, I am stunned by the audacity of Joab. It’s one of the things that makes him my favorite character.
At the end of King David’s life, he ordered a census of Israel. This was a major sin, something David was not supposed to do. (Tangent. According to scholars, the census only purpose was for conscription and taxation, so is God against census’s and taxation? This anarchist thinks so). Joab says to David that he should not do this, that it would be sin. So in this situation, Joab takes the moral route, while David is the one being evil. So this is also revealing of Joab’s morality. David makes Joab do the census anyways, which results in devastating punishment from God.
Joab, the ally and adversary of the great King David! His role as adversary foremost comes to light as David orders Solomon to kill him. When Joab was aware he was to be killed, he took refuge in a temple, and said “I’ll die here.” This shows the man’s faith I believe, and makes me love his character even more.
All in all, I think Joab is one of the most developed characters in the Bible and one of the sickest antihero’s in literary history.
