The Last Sermon of Prophet Muhammad.

Before you read this text, I want you to understand it is not written by @Conscious thoughts :) This English translation may hold less good translation from the Arabic language, so if you are an Arabic-speaking person and see something here you think was translated wrong, you would know the meaning by these words anyway.

The Last Sermon Of Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h.)

This sermon was delivered on the Ninth day of Dhul-Hijjah, 10 A.H. ( 623AD) in the Uranah valley of Mount Arafat in Mecca. It was the occasion of annual rites of Haj. It is also known as the Farewell Pilgrimage.

After praising and thanking Allah the Prophet (p.b.u.h.) began with the words:

"O People! Lend me an attentive ear, for I know not whether after this year I shall ever be amongst you again. Therefore, listen carefully to what I am saying and take these words to those who could not be present here today."

"O People! just as you regard this month, this day ,this city as sacred ,so regard the life and property of every Muslim a sacred trust. Return the goods entrusted to you to their rightful owners. Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you. Remember that you will indeed meet your Lord, and that he will indeed reckon your deeds."

"Allah has forbidden you to take usury, therefore all interest obligation shall henceforth be waived. Your capital is yours to keep .You will neither inflict nor suffer any inequality. Allah has judged that there shall be no interest and that all interest due to Abbas Ibn 'Aal-Muttalib be waived."

"Every right arising out of homicide in pre-Islamic days is henceforth waived and the first such right that I waive is that arising from the murder of Rabiah ibni al-Harithiah."

"O men! the unbelievers indulge in tampering with the calendar in order to make permissible that which Allah forbade, and to prohibit what Allah has made permissible. With Allah the months are twelve in number. Four of them are holy, there are sucessive and one occurs singly between the months of Jumada and Shaban."

"Beware of Satan, for the safety of your religion. He has lost all hope that he will be able to lead you astray in big things so beware of following him in small things."

"O People it is true that you have certain rights with regard to your women but they also have rights over you. Remember that you have taken them as your wives only under Allah's trust and with His permission. If they abide by your right then to them belongs the right to be fed and clothed in kindness. Do treat your women well and be kind to them for they are your partners and committed helpers. And it is your right that they do not make friends with any one of whom you do not approve, as well never to be unchaste."

"O People! listen to me in earnest, worship Allah, say your five daily prayers, fast during month of Ramadan, and give your wealth in Zakat .Perform Haj if you can afford it."

"All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a White has no superiority over a Black nor a Black has any superiority over a White except by piety and good action. Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood. Nothing shall be legitimate to a Muslim which belongs to a fellow Muslim unless it was given freely and willingly."

"Do not therefore do injustice to yourselves. Remember one day you will meet Allah and answer your deeds. So beware, do not astray from the path of righteousness after I am gone."

"O People! No Prophet or apostle will come after me and no new faith will be born. Reason well, therefore O People! and understand words that I convey to you. I leave behind me two things, the Quran and the Sunnah and if you follow these you will never go astray."

"All those who listen to me shall pass on my words to others and those to others again; and may the last ones understand my words better than those who listen to me directly."

"O Allah, be my witness, that I have conveyed your message to Your people."

As part of this sermon, the prophet recited to them a revelation from Allah, which he had just received, and which completed the Quran, for it was the last passage to be revealed:

This day the disbeliever's despair of prevailing against your religion, so fear them not, but fear Me (Allah)! This day have I perfected for you, your religion and fulfilled My favor unto you, and it hath been My good pleasure to choose Islam for you as your religion. (Surah 5, Ayah 3)

The sermon was repeated sentence by sentence by Safwan's brother Rabiah (RA), who had powerful voice, at the request of the Prophet and he faithfully, proclaimed to over ten thousand gathered on the occasion. Towards the end of his sermon, the Prophet asked "O people, have I faithfully delivered unto you my message?" A powerful murmur of assents "O Allah! yes!"arose from thousands of pilgrims and the vibrant words "Allahumma Na'm," rolled like thunder throughout the valley. The Prophet raised his forefinger and said: "O Allah bear witness that I have conveyed your message to your people."

From all of that, you managed to pick out one line, and critique it? and base all the religion on one line?

They are fine words, ahead of their time ... what a pity too many of his followers either ignore them or still live in as if they were in the times when they were written

Yes, there are unfortunately Muslims today who do not live according to Prophet Muhammad's last sermon.
To me it clearly speaks to me like that as a Sufi I am on the right path in understanding how to behave toward others as a muslim.

Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you.

In other words, the 'golden rule'.

"O People it is true that you have certain rights with regard to your women but they also have rights over you....]Do treat your women well and be kind to them for they are your partners and committed helpers.

There is nothing in the sermon about being a slave. First it clearly states that women have rights that must be honored. And by implication women have the right to be treated kindly. It's clearly addressed to men and clearly emphasizes that men need to be kind to their wives. In the 21st century, being kind includes the right to a complete education, to fulfilling dreams through work if it's a woman's choice and to be treated as an equal etc.

an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a White has no superiority over a Black nor a Black has any superiority over a White except by piety and good action.

And the sermon is utterly clear about racism - it's forbidden. That is so far ahead of the Western world and still is today because we see racist deeds in the news all the time.

Outside of some bits that I take as the product of their time and place such as the details of the relationship between husband and wife, the vast majority is to me still applicable today.

Nice last message of the Prophet

Reading above quote, my first thought was:
"No Prophet will come again to the people over there, who were given the Koran". In those days they had no airplanes or internet, so these Scriptures were given to a specific group of people, in a specific country.

I also remember Sai Baba teaching us "to live in the present moment, not in the past nor in the future". So, when God gives a message it's spot on for that moment and those people. People tend to desire to know about the future, but that is not a spiritual attitude, hence Masters bring people always back with their feet on the ground, in the NOW. Of course people keep on asking about the future, hence verses sneak in about the future, because God in His mercy will Grant us sometimes things we ask. But Sai Baba also warned us "Beware what you ask from God, because He might give you, but you might not like it". These were some very valuable advices given, that most people don't know, and hence they can become very rigid in their faith

For the Muslims of today. i believe there is important to read the messages from God as if they were given today, even those teachings in the Quran were written a long time ago, and it would still be a correct way to practice this teaching. Not to change the words, but to see it from a p.o.v of today

True.

And the Prophet even implied this, kind of literally, in the OP given "final message" of the Prophet

In my country this is called “Hobsons choice” which means no actual choice, take it or else, there isn’t another one.

There is always the choice to walk away (at least that is what is said in Sufism) God does not keep anyone hostage

I think this bit will see many opposed to Islam, when equality for all is often seen as a better aim, and something that will see the demise of Islam perhaps if it doesn't change sufficiently. Apart form the fact of monogamy having any real basis other than in the minds of some, and where we might just be destined for all sorts of other arrangements, just as we have seen a decline in marriage for decades in many countries.

Yes it is of course a part of the sermon that is difficult to hear, it was also made to the people of that time, The Muslims of today don't have to treat a woman poorly, if a Muslim today know that being good to a woman get him further and the relationship is stronger with a supporting husband, do that, support the wife.

if you are worried your wife has "friends" or is cheating, speak to them, ask them if your suspicion is right. And if it is right that the wife does something that a wife should not do, there is two option, forgiveness or leaving. One does not have to treat others badly just because we are muslims.

I have to comment on this Conscious thoughts, the wording of that was very strange, I do not see anything in the Quran that would reflect those words, so I started looking up versions of that speech.

Why do you think are there are so many versions?

Here is another version, notice the vast differences.

" I have left among you the Book of Allah, and if you hold fast to it, you would never go astray. And you would be asked about me (on the Day of Resurrection), (now tell me) what would you say? They (the audience) said: We will bear witness that you have conveyed (the message), discharged (the ministry of Prophethood) and given wise (sincere) counsel. He (the narrator) said: He (the Holy Prophet) then raised his forefinger towards the sky and pointing it at the people (said): "O Allah, be witness. O Allah, be witness," saying it thrice."

Sahih Muslim Book 15, Hadith 159

So do we put other versions up for discussion? Some of those versions are not as kind to women as well.

Regards Tony

Well, as you have said, the sermon was made for the people of that time, and no doubt for those for whom it was intended. Much like many other texts. The Taliban, and many others, still seem to find some justification for their barbaric treatment of females within such sermons though - or wherever else. And for me, just another indication as to religions being a human invention, not for all time, and a drag on progress so often when such attitudes are promulgated via such revered texts.

Of course one doesn't necessarily have to accept such texts at face value - some interpretation allowed - but they still seem to cause as much confusion as they do with regards enlightenment.
