Kent Hovind Sentenced for Domestic Violence

Being an ignorant Deist I've never heard of him.
Thing is, when a Christian does bad things, most other Christians can answer by saying, 'He ain't a Christian!'
Thus Christianity can constantly cleanse itself no matter what Christians get caught doing.

Completely agree. I think it's worth those of us who are non-Christian don't fall into using these type of things as judgements on all Christianity, too.

This Christian is bad. And...maybe...his form of Christianity is bad (in which case happy for it to be called out).

I know plenty of Christians who would readily disown him (and I don't blame them). But ultimately Christianity isn't an exclusive club that only accepts 'good' people. Otherwise a lot of the struggle (and rhetoric, frankly) of good Christians becomes meaningless, imho.

That doesn't really happen in the real world, though. People are lots of different things at any given time, and even at the same time. One label just won't cover all the complexity that is a human being.

This guy didn't just disgrace his professed religion, he disgraced his manhood, his marriage contract, and anyone who held him in high esteem. But it's all his own doing. Not the doing of his religion, or his wife, or his friends, or his gender. He alone is responsible for what he's done. And that's why you're hearing the "no true Scotsman" responses.

I 99% agree with this, and I love how you tied it back to personal responsibility.

Holy crap!! Kent Hovind just got married again!:eek:

I was checking YouTube out and thought that I would see how his channel reacted to his conviction. He is not in jail yet. He is appealing it. I guess he thinks that 59th time is the charm. And while he was rambling he dropped the bomb that he is married again and brought his new wife out for show and tell:

EDIT: This is a live stream that still may be going on. I have paused it a few times so he may be done and I have not caught up to it.

Yep. That's why I always say that "Christian" is a label without meaning. It says nothing about the person.

Alright....... You're right, of course.

But....... My excuse is that I keep reading about the female 'deal' in Texas, or the Christian extreme right(ists) in politics, or the homophobia, or the......... (it goes on).
I've been washed with these reports for so long, so much, that I'm getting to be an even bigger grump about Christianity than ever before.

I need counselling. Sometimes I rant about all this when bathing with the Missus but she just stares at me with that 'It'll soon be time to take him away' look.

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.

All things considered, yes. He may have even knocked up his latest. I would not be surprised. It always has been just about him. He is unlikely to see that kid graduate from high school. But then have any of his kids gone to a real school?

Nope, I get it.

I know Christians of both varieties, and they are completely different to each other, so I often feel like I need to make sure one isn't judged on the thoughts and actions of the other.

Just as I prefer not to be judged by the actions of some atheists.

But I understand what you mean, too. I find myself wondering about people who have too much certainty on things. It's a little delusional. Healthy levels of doubt keep one more humble I think!

Doubt is almost always a good thing. I had just a teensy bit of doubt about this. Last night I was checking up on this story and thought "Why not go to Kent Hovind's YouTube channel". And what do you know, he was live streaming talking about just this event. He presented his side of the story. He did have audio recording of the event and Kent always had the ability to spin a good yarn. He made his innocence sound just plausible. But then I realized that I was only hearing one side of the story. I have a feeling if I heard all of the evidence, including the medical reports, that I would find Kent's account then less than believable. Could I be a fair juror if he had a jury trail? I would like to think so. I know that I would be a fairer juror than any of his sycophants. But I do have just a teensy tiny amount of utter disgust with the fraud. i Know that I would be rejected rathe quickly from the jury pool for such a trail.
