Disturbing study results indicate babies born during pandemic have lower IQs

Disturbing preliminary findings by researchers in a new U.S. study allege that children born during the pandemic exhibit significantly lower IQ scores than babies who were born before January 2020.

The culprit could be the fact that the first 1,000 days of a child’s life are the most crucial in their development cycle. The pandemic has impacted that growth period, according to the study.

Pre-pandemic babies were estimated in the study to have an IQ ranging from 98.5 to 107.3. Babies born during the pandemic saw their IQ shockingly drop 27 to 37 points.

The abstract from the study reads:

Since the first reports of novel coronavirus in the 2020, public health organizations have advocated preventative policies to limit virus, including stay-at home orders that closed businesses, daycares, schools, playgrounds, and limited child learning and typical activities. Fear of infection and possible employment loss has placed stress on parents... For pregnant individuals, fear of attending prenatal visits also increased maternal stress, anxiety, and depression. Not surprising, there has been concern over how these factors, as well as missed educational opportunities and reduced interaction, stimulation, and creative play with other children might impact child neurodevelopment. Leveraging a large on-going longitudinal study of child neurodevelopment, we examined general childhood cognitive scores in 2020 and 2021 vs. the preceding decade, 2011-2019. We find that children born during the pandemic have significantly reduced verbal, motor, and overall cognitive performance compared to children born pre-pandemic. Moreover, we find that males and children in lower socioeconomic families have been most affected. Results highlight that even in the absence of direct SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 illness, the environmental changes associated COVID-19 pandemic is significantly and negatively affecting infant and child development.

My personal thoughts are this. I see this possible IQ drop as a purposeful side effect of COVID regulations. I worry what would happen if this trend were to continue, which seems plausible.
What do you guys think about this disturbing development? Do you think this trend will continue? What else could be causing this IQ drop?

I find it kinda bizarre that so many of the same people who want pandemic regulations to end refuse to do their part in helping to end them. If you don't support masking, vaccination, and/or social distancing but still want regulations to end, you are effectively asking for governments to act like the pandemic doesn't exist and throw millions of lives under the bus.

The study is concerning if it is true that the development of some children born during the pandemic is affected by the current circumstances. The answer, however, isn't just to pretend the pandemic doesn't exist, since that would have even more damaging effects not just on children (including ones whose parents may die or get severely ill) but on their families as well.

IQ tests aren't great and I think this is way too soon.

It seems like nonsense to me.
Well, being in Market Research myself, I would tend to disagree if the tests they used are the same tests they have been using with relatively stable results. When that is in play, then a statistical anomaly does have some source.

So, in terms of your idea that "IQ tests aren't great" - this actually doesn't even matter in the scope of the research it sounds like they have been conducting. If you use even what everyone agrees is the crappiest test in the world, but you use it consistently, and it generates consistent results given mostly steady states of other factors in play, and then one day you use it and your results are a good percentage askew, then the logical conclusion is that something changed in your sample... not the test itself.

Seriously?
We can determine the IQ of babies?

I hope no one informs the babies.
They’ll grow up with a complex.

This bothers me most..

The researchers’ findings were posted on medRxiv before a peer-review occurred on Aug. 11. A survey was conducted among approximately 672 children in Rhode Island. The majority of the babies were white and 39 of them were born in 2018 and 2019.

That's an absurdly small number for a test like this and to try making anything out of it is garbage imo. Not to mention there was no pandemic in 2018 and 2019.

Again... this doesn't even matter. If you are performing the same test on babies (no matter what it is), and get relatively stable results over time, and then one day you perform the exact same tests and the results are widely different, then something is up with the babies who took your test.

I don't care if the test is just giving them a piece of toilet paper and seeing what they do with it. If 99% of babies given the piece of toilet paper EAT it for 40 years of you giving this test, and then one year your results are that only 59% of babies eat it... there's something up.

One question.
As others have brought to the fore front.

How do you go about measuring a baby's IQ?

Toilet paper? Seriously?

Ah... that is a relatively low sample size, I admit. Though the inclusion of babies from 2018 and 2019 would only strengthen the average IQ rating of the overall group if their conclusions are correct - so I don't believe that is of any particular concern, except to perhaps note that their sample was a bit contaminated. The ultimate reality is, if the IQs of Covid babies are, indeed, lowered, but the sample contained some non-Covid babies (who presumedly wouldn't have this issue), then the scores being that off-base is even more concerning. Because the contamination should have seen the average with a slight uptick (toward base average) if anything at all.

OMG,

Science dives even to a lower low

This pandemic started ca. 1 year ago. I did my first IQ test when I was 18 month old if I remember correctly (or was it age 18)?

At what age can you test a child's IQ? While you can test a child's IQ as early as 2 years and 6 months of age, the results may not be accurate and may in fact change with age. The best time to test IQ in children is between ages 5 and 8.30 May 2021

What gets to me is there's always this idea that we must be 'doing' something about something. "This many cats got tangled in string this year! Fix it!" "This many brunettes eat too many M&Ms! Action must be taken!" When the heck are humans going to get to the 'being' part of human being? We're mostly human doings at this point.

While I suspect the results are full of something similarly contained in my cats' litter box, another thing that comes to mind is... so what. What can be done about it? Nothing. We're in a pandemic. Things have changed, if not permanently, for a long term amount of time. Secondly...so what? Why must everyone be a genius? What is wrong with simply being average? Like has already said, how can you test the IQ of an infant, and even if you could, that may change over time. If it doesn't, and they're not college professor material when they hit adulthood... so what? One doesn't need to be superbly intelligent to live a happy and productive life.

Cmon now... How are you going to infer anything from toilet paper?

Are IQ tests for babies something that's been going on for a while? Can we infer that a "low IQ baby" will grow up to become a "low IQ adult?" How many tests have we done that determines that the observed mental faculties of baby can be studied enough to determine what level of IQ they would have later on? We aren't talking about specific mental disabilities like microcephaly, here. We are talking about all functioning brains.
