Exposing the dark underbelly of RF

So, in one of my recent threads, I mentioned to you, dear readers, that young @SalixIncendium had taken to wearing a fake beard.
This was exposed when he made the decision to roll with an avatar using his actual face. And he's not the only person I've noticed doing this of late. Turns out @ADigitalArtist isn't actually a giant floating eye. @Deeje is also now using an actual picture of herself as her avatar too.

It's gone from mildly annoying (if I wanted to see people of dubious quality every morning, I'd go to an anti-mask protest), to an actual social movement. As an old white guy, the only movements I'm interested in facing each morning are the ones I help along by eating bran flakes.

In any case, I'm getting off topic here. I investigated carefully across RF, and came across the following post;
Also I love seeing people’s faces, seeing more picture avatars! ^.^ It feels more personable to me. Though I get half the point of RF is the anonymity. Still, I like talking to people; and faceless avatars feel less like that.

The perp (as we call them in the RF Investigation Unit)? @Meow Mix
It would be fine, of course, if this was all just honest foppery, the way it's presented. However, I suspect 'young' @Meow Mix is a little more that she is presenting as.

Notice in her post that she uses ^.^ rather than the more modern :smilecat:?
It's a sure sign that she dates back to the old dial-up days.
And notice how she uses words like anonymity, and even spells them correctly? Younger folk don't have the level of concentration that requires. Not even close.

At first, I figured @Meow Mix was a 56 year old Texas Ranger named Gary, searching RF to try and track down Mexican border jumpers. I mean, it's the obvious conclusion to jump to, right?
But then I started thinking. Who do we know on RF who has a Hello Kitty fetish? Obvs, it's @Debater Slayer. So even her posting name might be a form of entrapment.

At this point, I can only assume this is some sort of long play to get DS to reveal his face. Don't do it, DS. Keep your Dio avatar. I dunno what she's up to, but it's sinister. I can smell it.
And @Meow Mix ??

I've always been a pelican LnM.....you wont ever see an actual picture of me for the reasons I am seeing when people use actual pictures of themselves now after years of seeing their avatars.....it can be soul destroying to have an image shattered like that. I'll keep my ugly mug to myself.....

It drives home to me the reasons why we have avatars.....and why people should continue to use them....no offense to any one. :p

I'll have you know that I'm actually a 56 year old TRUCKER named Jimbo.

And I see what you're doing. Following the bread crumbs, eh? Who leaves a bunch of bread crumbs laying around?

I actually do hail from the dial-up days. I remember AOL 2.5 when you could type in color.

I remember being on the computer upstairs and losing my connection with my dad yelling "ERIN!!!" up the stairs when he wanted to use the phone, and waiting impatiently to be able to get back on so I could correct more wrong people on the internet.

(Which of course I failed at, because at the time, I was a young earth creationist arguing in a chat room called Evolution is a FACT!).

This is why I have a Sacred Heart chestpiece tattoo, from these days. Someone DM'd me yesterday asking if my Sacred Heart was a Goku tattoo haha! (I could see where they were getting that from the picture I was using yesterday).

Wait, wait, wait...are you suggesting you're not ACTUALLY a pelican? That almost deserves a thread all of it's own.

I was all about ICQ. I can still remember that little cuckoo noise when you'd get a message...lol
But at that point I wasn't insane enough to discuss religion. It was all play-by-post RP.
Geeky indeed, but I met some actually good writers. And some horrible, horrible ones who couldn't play off another poster if their life depended on it.

I pulled this one in real life once. As you might imagine, I was a little inebriated at the time, but I found myself highly amusing. Only issue, my girlfriend (at the time) had no idea about Archer, and so didn't view it as anything other than me LITERALLY signaling for her to shut-up whilst I downed a bottle of booze. I nearly squirted it out my nose when I took a breath, she went to speak, and I repeated the whole thing.

She was not amused.

"Welcome" and "You've got mail!" are still engrained in my brain.

I did RP on AOL, there was a whole community called RhyDin. Everybody was really angsty though (I mean, so was I; and then I went on to be an emo/scene girl, because of course I did).

Never did ICQ.

I'm trying to think of the name of the place I posted. I wanna say...Ever...something? There was a kinda game involved (which I took semi-seriously at best) and a very active posting board back around late nineties or so.
Meh...can't remember.

We'd then use ICQ to chat.

Did you ever use IM Bombers to kick people you were arguing with in those chat rooms off the internet? God... Those were dark days. :D

Oh my god no but I remember that. And people disrupting chats by entering and running something that would lag the chat completely to death.

This whole conversation is giving me flashbacks to this. I can almost hear the sound just by staring at the GIF...

Internet lingo began to evolve, and many different new forms of communication began to form, but what the hell was 1337 5p33k, and why did it make my eyes bleed?
