So, my cat may have ruined my interview today

Maybe this should be in the joke sub-forum but it’s not really that funny. So, today I had a great interview despite my cat interfering. He started scratching the carpet and meowing at the top of his lungs, and the recruiter started smiling. (It was a Zoom call)

Then, that crazy lil guy jumped on my desk and started meowing, pushing my laptop with his head so it moved and I couldn’t see the recruiter. Omg. I said “oh wow, I’m so sorry for this. It’s my cat...”

The recruiter laughed and my cat then calmed down. He rarely acts like this, but if you were the recruiter, would you have laughed or been annoyed?

Tell meeee...I can take it. :tired:

I would have smiled, but I'm a bit biased because I'm a cat lover to the core. :D

I think you'd be fine. Depending on your job, I think most recruiters want to talk with a human. When I had my interview couple weeks ago my boss commented that she needed to lose weight and when I started she asked why I don't eat that much I'm so skinny.

I think there's a balance, but I think a lot of people like animals. If he/she would have accidently cut off your monitor or computer, then yeah, I'd be a bit annoyed but nothing criminal. It depends on your qualifications.

So agree. I would want to be hiring a human not just a resume being regurgitated. At least that’s what I tell myself. Lol ;)

Handing out gold stars today cuz ya’ll are winners!

What kind of job was it for, Diedre?

If you were trying to get hired as a lion tamer, I think you may be in trouble.

I've been on several hiring panels, and overall that sort of thing wouldn't even factor in to the hiring decision........unless you panicked or otherwise acted strange when your cat did all that. IOW, if it played a role at all, it wouldn't be due to what your cat did, but how you responded to it.

But it sounds like you apologized and laughed and may have even shared a funny moment with the interviewer, so you can probably rest easy.

And if they somehow came back and said something like "We were going to hire you, but we went another direction due to what your cat did during the interview", then you likely don't want to work there anyways. :)

@Deidre I agree with @Jose Fly that your reaction to what your cat did would probably be more of a deciding factor for most people then the incident itself.

For one thing, it gave the person conducting the interview some idea about how patient you are and how well you operate under stress.

I would have hired the cat ... and you too ... esp if it was a job working with cartoons like "Tom and Deidre"

IF the person gets annoyed then at least you know that the person is a "cat-hater", because a "cat-lover" (others) would love such "cat-fight"

It could be the other way around. The recruiter is a "cat-lover" and without your "cat-stunt" you would not have gotten the job

Would have made no difference to me probably. If there was a lot of remote work involved in the job, I might ask you how you were going to manage him during meetings with clients.
Otherwise I'm just laughing.

IF everything else went perfect THEN you get the job; would be a lousy recruiter to judge the cat instead of you (unless he was recruiting cats)
