Why the "my God" vs "your God" ?

Spirit of Light

This is something I can not wrap my head around, so to speak.

When someone say "my God" do they own this God? Because the next they ask is can " your God" do so or so?

I do not own a God....if anything i am in dept to Allah every day of my life, and maybe i never will be able to repay my dept....

But when someone say "my God do or say so or so" what does it mean?
Do they believe they are the owner of the God

Its shorthand for "my concept of God" vs "your concept of God"
In my opinion

It is a case of my concept of God vs your concept of God, but is also a case of my scriptures vs your scriptures and my religion vs your religion.
If only one God is the true God, which is it.
Is there just one God or are there many?
And something that does not come up, do atheists serve, (their God), even if it is not of a spiritual nature?
The truth will set you free but "my God" is fair in judgement no matter which God you believe in and serve.

Would you share your lover with someone else?
So why would that be different with God?

He is mine and mine alone.
I will not share Him with anyone.

“Thou shall not covet”, says the Christian faith.

True, Man [church] has used that - and indeed, religious scripture in general - to control the goals and behaviours of its followers (leaving worldly riches to be coveted by others, for instance). But he who has tried both ways of life (possessed as much as possible vs. abandoned his concept of ownership), will know that there is nonetheless great wisdom in that phrase.

In my opinion there's an error in this question. I agree with @danieldemol when it comes to concepts but the caveat is assuming there is one god by many names. Therefore how can someone own God if it is assumed my god is your God because God is god of all.

That's why I like using terms like Jesus, Jehovah, Allah, hashem or so have you. It personalizes god to where it's not assumed that there is just one god that people oddly say they own. It's their personal belief just God is a convenient word for a idea totally different than their peers.

Instead of my god says X, it would be jehovah says X. It separates whose god is whose without the assumption everyone has the sane god by different names.

"My" doesn't necessarily denote literal ownership. It can also denote affiliation or connection:

- my spouse
- my friends
- my country
- my favourite restaurant
- my route to work

I don't technically "own" any gods. The bank does. I'm still making payments.

Seriously though, when someone says "my God," I take that to mean "the god I worship/revere." Unless they are saying it with a certain inflection...

So you believe you own your lover and dictate what and what they cannot do?
Yes, He is only mine and He can dictate what I can and cannot do.
And the thing is, Brahma is so infinitely vast, that billions of His lovers can make the same claim, because He is our Supreme Subject and not our object.

In the novel The Master and Margarita, by Mikhael Bulgakov, the following exchange takes place between Pontius Pilate, the devout Roman polytheist, and an itinerant Jewish mystic accused of heresy and treason.

And then, lowering his voice [Pilate] asked: "Yeshua Ha-Nosri, do you believe in any Gods?"
"God is one," replied Yeshua, "I believe in him."
"Then pray to him! Pray hard!"

I get the funny, but truth be told, I know many atheists that say, "Oh my god," because it's become such a familiar colloquialism.

As i used to do. Not until i spotted the mene several years ago did i change my wording

That was not the question.

You asked

"Would you share your lover with someone else?"

My question was

So you believe you own your lover and dictate what and what they cannot do?
