Christians Only: Punishment

Jeremiah Ames

Well-Known Member
I have heard from Christian religion that sin requires some sort of punishment.

I am wondering what that punishment is?

  1. I think that anyone who believes they could sin, would get the self inflicted punishment within themselves, and in their worldly lives as well. Those who don’t see that they could ever possibly be wrong about anything, have no concept of sin, and cannot receive any punishment, from God or within themselves.
  2. I think that a God of love, could not possibly have ANY punishment planned, except that which I stated in #1, which is self inflicted, not God inflicted.
  3. I think that a God of love would NOT demand payment.
  4. I think this extends to nations. God has NO interest in nations, only individuals, and therefore does NOT punish nations or bless nations.

Where is my thinking wrong?

Hi Jeremiah Ames. Good evening. Respectfully, your thinking is wrong because it lacks a knowledge and understanding of the Word of Yahweh. Yes, many times we do self-inflict damage to ourselves when we sin, but Yahweh also punishes not just individuals for their sins but also nations. You can determine this yourself by reading the 10 commandments. In the third commandment, it tells us that Yahweh will not leave unpunished the man who misuses his Name. Misusing His Name can take many forms, it can be straightforwardly speaking evil of Yahweh, or not using His Name, or it could be doing damage to the reputation of Yahweh by sinning. Furthermore, they are myriad scriptures which tells us that Yahweh will punish those who break Yahweh's Laws. Have you never read the blessing and the curse from Deuteronomy 28? Blessings come from Yahweh for keeping His Laws, curses, for breaking them. This goes beyond just self-inflicted punishments.

You think that a Mighty One of love could not possibly have any punishment planned, but I'm amazed with how many people have their own ideas about what a Mighty One of love would and wouldn't do. Yahweh is love, 1 John 4:8 tells us so, but love is not the mushy, soft idea that is rattled around today. Love includes justice, and justice includes punishment and sometimes death to those who have committed crimes. Yahweh loves His Son because He has proven himself obedient to Him, but I suspect that those who put Yahshua to death were punished accordingly. They will most definitely receive the punishment at the Judgment Seat.

In terms of Yahweh having no interest in nations, or punishing or blessing nations, why then is there this scripture: "He that chastiseth the nations, shall not he correct, Even he that teacheth man knowledge?" (Psalm 94:10).

Yahweh is invisible so it may not seem that there is punishment in this world for sin, but I assure you, Yahweh still does punish people for their sins. He did in many instances in the Bible, including the Ananias and Sapphira incident, and He continues to do so today. Perhaps Yahweh doesn't punish people as quickly as he once did, and Solomon says in the Book of Ecclesiastes 8:11 that because of this people don't see the need to repent, they continue to do evil, but Yahweh's patience and mercy doesn't take away the fact that He does indeed punish people.

Its not punishment that is the mark of God's justice, but a restoration through metanoia, repentance.

Hi Pearl. Good morning. Justice may involve punishment which intends to correct the individual so they won't sin again for the less serious crimes, but it also involves punishing the individual for the evil they have done and sometimes that means receiving death. For example, murder is the taking of another life and you can't restore that life once you have taken it. Yahweh has said in His Word that man that sheds another persons blood, by man shall his blood be shed (Genesis 9:6). That means Yahweh has legitimized mankind to carry out the death penalty for murder.

Ezra 7:26 says:
"And whosoever will not do the law of thy Elohim, and the law of the king, let judgment be executed upon him with all diligence, whether it be unto death, or to banishment, or to confiscation of goods, or to imprisonment."

The king here had a concept of justice. It would mean some kind of punishment for those who violated the Law of Yahweh.

In the Law of Yahweh, a person could even be beaten with the rod for crimes (Deuteronomy 25:3). Such punishment was intended to bring the individual to repentance. It's not like today where if someone does something wrong, you have a word with them and they continue to do evil. Back in Biblical times they realized through the Law of Yahweh that when a person sins, they have channeled out a path in their life to repeat that sin in their life, and unless drastic measures are taken to deter them from sin, that individual will not come to repentance. Their heart will become hardened to repeat that sin. This is the deceitfulness of sin Hebrews 3:13 talks about.

We have Yahshua the Messiah as our deterrence from sin. He had to suffer for us and this should make us want to keep out evil out of our lives.

I would also like to mention that not everyone, very few people in fact, want to come to repentance. Do you remember Noah's Flood? Only 8 souls made it through that deluge alive. In Revelation, we read that they are 144,000 chosen people who follow the Lamb wherever He goes. Small number compared to the billions of people on earth. Judgement is about receiving the reward for our actions, whether good or bad (but we often think of just the bad). However, as was the case with the account of Jonah, judgment can be averted through repentance.
