Do you feel you are being discriminated against? How?

One definition of discrimination I came across says that:

Unlawful discrimination arises when someone is treated unfairly because of their age, disability, family/carer responsibilities, gender identity (including trans, transgender and gender diverse), homosexuality or other sexual orientation, marital, domestic or relationship status, race, or sex.
(Discrimination)

Do you believe you or your group are singled out, ostracised or discriminated against. It could also be based on wealth or lack of it.

How would you deal with being treated differently say by those of higher academic status? Being ignored or rebuffed. How should we deal with discrimination? Confront it, fight it, or just ignore it. Will it go away if we ignore it? How can we get rid of it?

It's human nature to discriminate.

Everyone at one point in their life faces discrimination. If you've been passed over for a job in favor of another applicant, you've been discriminated against.

Everyone at some point in life discriminates. I had a choice pongal or upma for breakfast today. Without discrimination, I wouldn't have been able to decide what to eat, or to eat at all. (I had upma, if anyone is interested.)

Discrimination is requisite to choice.

How one deals with it should, in my opinion, depend on the kind of discrimination it is.

I noticed this thread is in Religious Debates. What does this have to do with religion, or how is it exclusive to it?

What is it you wish to debate?

There are not many who control the urge to discriminate others for whatever reason, so probably many discriminate me too

I might remind them that this type of attitude does not reflect their academic status

And afterwards I love Sai Baba's advice "Run away from bad company". Works wonders in these cases
And if I can't run, then I remind myself that they are also 'children of God'.
Tigers are also God's creations, but I rather run away from them too

I left the church and those discriminating against me behind.

If I do feel I'm being treated unfairly, I recognise that, because of karma, it's only a result my own past actions. So I'll stop that circle by not reacting.

As for the term 'discrimination', it's probably wise to pinpoint what type you're referring to. As Salix, pointed out, we all use it constantly as a mental process.

I'd try to get away from a victim mentality. It would be healthier if folks accepted the fact that not everyone is going to like or treat one fairly in life because of characteristics or intelligence.

I would never want those kind of people to be my friends anyways so it's no great loss or sweat off my back over it.

What's important is focusing on those who are not like that. It's people like that who can make you shine.

Theres a lot of discrimination and prejudice. I don’t see it as normal, only that media and conflicts have conditioned it. Religious prejudice is rampant in society and I believe it prevents us from establishing peace.

Perhaps prejudice is a better word. We all discern and discriminate between things but i thing prejudice harms people either passively or directly.

Some folks keep an eye open for it, so that they can play the victim card, whether it's real or not. I'm a minority within a minority, and I've rarely felt it. People often have very good reasons for behaving as they do. Am I prejudiced because I avoid going to certain areas of my city late at night?

There is? Where? Perhaps we have differing ideas of 'a lot'. In my experience, the vast majority of people get along incredibly well. Of course there are a few bad apples, but they're the ones that make the news. The news has a way of distorting reality by highlighting the worst of society. The corrupt politician gets 100 times more attention than the honest hard working one.

I used to. A lot of times now it's extreme empathy for people who are still discriminated against for one's race, gender, sexuality, disability, nationality, religion, and the like. There's nothing I can really do. In many cases it feels like I'm going through it too. It's hard to keep my mouth shut in instances I can't help And not to put my mental and/or physical well being in jeopardy.

Take women. In most countries women don’t have equal pay. Often they want more women in the workplace because they are cheap labour. In some countries they are refused a license or to go out in public without a male.

In Australia governments have been voted out for allowing migrants in from Muslim countries. Because of the bad few and negative media, Muslims have been targeted and then there was the Mosque massacre in NZ.

It may depend on which country one resides in. Countries which have strong education/laws to respect all religions, races and nationalities often do best.

You can choose to focus on that, or not. It clearly disturbs some minds. In many countries, and I'd like to think the vast majority, women get equal pay for equal work. In the last 50 yeas that had changed a ton, and it's sill changing. Not only that, but in many, where the woman is the caregiver, she gets treated with great respect. Yes, there is still work to be done, but it's better to do that work, than to sit back ands complain, in my view. Take your wife out for supper tonight.
