I'd prefer a theory supported by current virologists and not just something by a 78yr old journalist, whose reputation in recent years has been far from spotless. This smells of right wing politics to me, rather than science.

It's certainly possible the virus leaked from the Wuhan lab. After all, they do research on bat viruses there. But I take with a pinch of salt the assertions that it can't have been simply from a natural source. It seems most of the virologists who have worked on it think it had a natural source.
I'm not all that sure how looking for somebody to blame does anything at all about bringing the damned thing under control!

Instead, I prefer looking at what relevant health authorities, such as the WHO

I took the vaccine when I got the chance so I'm obviously not a conspiracy theorist in this regard.

If you took the WHO advice in real time though then covid wasn't a problem worth worrying about, closing borders was not beneficial, and people should definately not wear masks.

If you advocated these views now you would be considered an "anti-science" conspiracy theorist.

They were wrong on basically every call for 6 months, while also pandering to China's political interests at the expense of public health interests. Other than being called the WHO, and people assuming they are a competent and impartial body who somehow = "science", not sure what they have done to earn any great trust as guardians of global health.

Maybe it’s not necessarily about blaming, rather understanding so that in the future precautions can be taken to help prevent another such outbreak. It might be worth at least knowing the parties responsible for the millions of deaths from the virus...if there are those who are responsible.

Researchers urge an open mind, saying lack of evidence leaves theories of natural spillover and laboratory leak both viable.

Yes this seems a useful corrective to some of the wilder statements being made. It could have come from the wild or from a leak of a virus being studied at Wuhan and there is so far no conclusive evidence for which it was.

The virus does not exactly match any of the viruses found in the caves, thus it's considered more likely that it infected another animal, causing the virus to mutate-- evolution in process. But since the virus is natural, thus not synthetic, there's not really any likelihood that if it did come out of the lab that it was genetically altered.

Thus, I fail to see why some have politicized this.

Are you saying that it is not possible that they were studing this virus in the lab and due to a mistake to got out of the lab?
Or are you saying that you trust the Chinese Communist leadership to the point that you believe them?

If it did leak out from the lab and compelling evidence could be produced, there could be some kind of inquest into what went wrong and what can be done to stop a repetition. And it would be a huge setback for Xi and his horrible surveillance-state, which might in the end be a good thing for everyone. But pragmatically, the chances of anyone managing to carry out an unfettered and objective investigation are nil at present.
