God's Commands

Unless all the jealousy, vindictiveness, anger, and murdering attributed to God in the bible has no truth to it whatsoever and was simply written that way because ancient priests wanted people to fear God and come to them (the priests) for guidance thus making the priests extremely powerful.

Naw, couldn't possibly be that...

I love how sarcasm cuts straight to the point. I concure with you, my friend.

This is turning into the bash God thread. I wonder how many of you have studied the Bible to any length to make such profound statements.

Matthew 7: 1,2 NAS
Do not judge lest you be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you.

I am not bashing the concept of God, but merely Yahweh's psychopathic, murderous actions in the Old Testament.

Considering all the blood and destruction in the OT, I figure God's biggest lesson is...Do as I say, not as I do.

I point you to a wonderful passage in Acts 5: 1-11, it can be read Here
If the god of the bible didn't kill them, only two other possibilities present themselves to me. I'm sure they didn't die of guilt, so they were either killed by the disciple or his lackies, Or they had some bad cabbage and its just one heck of a coincidence. Its probably quite obvious, but I'm leaning towards the non-coincidence.

Not all attrocities written about in the bible are in the old testiment, make sure you read the all eleven verses, dont want anything taken out of context. For a bit of backstory, read Acts 4. Acts 4:34-37 lead into Acts 5

This brings to mind a comical view of the Bible by Mark Twain:

The two Testaments are interesting, each in its own way. The Old one gives us a picture of these people's Deity as he was before he got religion, the other one gives us a picture of him as he appeared afterward. The Old Testament is interested mainly in blood and sensuality, the New one in salvation. Salvation by fire.

The first time the Deity came down to earth he brought life and death; when he came the second time, he brought hell.

...

Now here is a curious thing. It is believed by everybody that while he was in heaven he was stern, hard, resentful, jealous, and cruel; but that when he came down to earth and assumed the name Jesus Christ, he became the opposite of what he was before: that is to say, he became sweet, and gentle, merciful, forgiving, and all harshness disappeared from his nature and a deep and yearning love for his poor human children too its place. Whereas it was as Jesus Christ that he devised hell and proclaimed it!

Which is to say, that as the meek and gentle Savior he was a thousand billion times crueler than ever he was in the Old Testament-oh, incomparably more atrocious than ever he was when he was at his very worst in those old days!

Yes, He did. Which is why I answered question ii as I did. However, I would do anything God commanded me to do.

What are your thoughts on the "Convert or Die" video game?

Men have used religion from time immemorial to justify their actions, especially heinous actions. Shrub does that to justify Haliburton's war. The OT is a blog written by man about his search for the living God. They are obviously written from a human perspective with the understanding of their science of the time as a filter.

Is God up to date? If you believe that God quit communicating with men centuries ago how do you know it's God's commandment to do anything? The times you speak of were barbaric times. I would like to think that mankind has advanced further than that. But current events tell me otherwise.
