The Future of Religion

A great future is unfolding, every day we move closer to that glorious future.

Baha’u’llah’s vision for the future of humanity centers around the oneness of the planet, the unity of all peoples and nations, and a just and lasting global peace and has said, "So powerful is the light of unity that it can illuminate the whole earth. Exert yourselves that ye may attain this transcendent and most sublime station, the station that can ensure the protection and security of all mankind."

Shoghi Effendi, the Guardian of the Baha’i Faith outlined the Baha’i vision of the unification of humanity clearly, beautifully and succinctly in March of 1936:

" The unity of the human race, as envisaged by Baha’u’llah, implies the establishment of a world commonwealth in which all nations, races, creeds and classes are closely and permanently united, and in which the autonomy of its state members and the personal freedom and initiative of the individuals that compose them are definitely and completely safeguarded.

This commonwealth must, as far as we can visualize it, consist of a world legislature, whose members will, as the trustees of the whole of mankind, ultimately control the entire resources of all the component nations, and will enact such laws as shall be required to regulate the life, satisfy the needs and adjust the relationships of all races and peoples.

A world executive, backed by an international Force, will carry out the decisions arrived at, and apply the laws enacted by, this world legislature, and will safeguard the organic unity of the whole commonwealth.

A world tribunal will adjudicate and deliver its compulsory and final verdict in all and any disputes that may arise between the various elements constituting this universal system.

A mechanism of world inter-communication will be devised, embracing the whole planet, freed from national hindrances and restrictions, and functioning with marvelous swiftness and perfect regularity.

A world metropolis will act as the nerve center of a world civilization, the focus towards which the unifying forces of life will converge and from which its energizing influences will radiate.

A world language will either be invented or chosen from among the existing languages and will be taught in the schools of all the federated nations as an auxiliary to their mother tongue.

Aworld script, a world literature, a uniform and universal system of currency, of weights and measures, will simplify and facilitate intercourse and understanding among the nations and races of mankind.

In such a world society, science and religion, the two most potent forces in human life, will be reconciled, will cooperate, and will harmoniously develop.

The press will, under such a system, while giving full scope to the expression of the diversified views and convictions of mankind, cease to be mischievously manipulated by vested interests, whether private or public, and will be liberated from the influence of contending governments and peoples.
The economic resources of the world will be organized, its sources of raw materials will be tapped and fully utilized, its markets will be coordinated and developed, and the distribution of its products will be equitably regulated.

National rivalries, hatreds, and intrigues will cease, and racial animosity and prejudice will be replaced by racial amity, understanding and cooperation.

The causes of religious strife will be permanently removed, economic barriers and restrictions will be completely abolished, and the inordinate distinction between classes will be obliterated.

Destitution on the one hand, and gross accumulation of ownership on the other, will disappear.

The enormous energy dissipated and wasted on war, whether economic or political, will be consecrated to such ends as will extend the range of human inventions and technical development, to the increase of the productivity of mankind, to the extermination of disease, to the extension of scientific research, to the raising of the standard of physical health, to the sharpening and refinement of the human brain, to the exploitation of the unused and unsuspected resources of the planet, to the prolongation of human life, and to the furtherance of any other agency that can stimulate the intellectual, the moral, and spiritual life of the entire human race." – World Order of Baha’u’llah, p. 203.

That sounds like a world where a United humanity using Faith and Science are working in Harmony and that is what I see will be the future.

The Baha'i Vision of the Future

Well such wouldn't satisfy those increasing numbers who don't want any religion so still more a replacement for those who can't stick with the one they currently might have. I was thinking more of an ideology that united us all - if such was possible - and religions (of any sort) are not such.

The post quoted has the Idealogical concepts given, how do you see those?

Personally I do not see one has to be a Baha'i to embrace those concepts.

I do not think that any ideology had the power to unite us all the way religion does. This missing element is God, because people who truly believe in God are wiling to sacrifice what they want for God and other people, thus it is possible that people can be united. The primary reason that is not possible now is because most religious people cling to the older religions and are unwilling to relinquish them for the sake of unity, but I believe that will change in the future when more people recognize Baha'u'llah and what He taught. I also believe that eventually there won't be anyone who does not want religion as all people will believe in God in the future. This turning away from religion is just a temporary phase many people are going through, as Christianity dies its final death, because that is the religion most people are leaving.

Well it has much in common with Humanism (not surprising if we all wanted much the same for all) and perhaps going somewhat further, but I don't see how one can eliminate the causes of religious strife when so many will just not abandon their own religious beliefs. And we still have the issue of those who have no religious beliefs and where this number might be increasing when nations become more prosperous, even if such is quite a way into the future. I don't see that many of the non-religious starting to become religious even if many with religious beliefs think that some divine events are on the cards. If such doesn't happen, this might even hasten the movement from religions. And such things have been predicted for ages. There also doesn't seem to be much concerning non-human life and how we should treat the planet. I get the impression that these latter two will become more important in the future.

I don't think so. Nothing temporary about my non-beliefs and I would think for many others too. Nothing is going to change that apart from some manifestation of God, and we have been expecting such for how long? Education has been a major factor in people turning away from religions. One has only to note the arguments used by many on RF who seemingly just don't have a good enough understanding of science to see that more education is the answer, unless one sees it differently?

I was not referring to your non-beliefs or the non-beliefs of others living today, I was referring to future generations.
Things are not likely to change drastically any time son, certainly not within your lifetime.

A Manifestation of God has come. His name was Baha'u'llah but most people just did not recognize Him because of their attachment to older religions and their biases against religion in general.

Education has been a major factor in older relogions but people cannot use that excuse for turning away from the Baha'i Faith since universal compulsory education is one of the most important Baha'i principles.

“Man is the supreme Talisman. Lack of a proper education hath, however, deprived him of that which he doth inherently possess. Through a word proceeding out of the mouth of God he was called into being; by one word more he was guided to recognize the Source of his education; by yet another word his station and destiny were safeguarded. The Great Being saith: Regard man as a mine rich in gems of inestimable value. Education can, alone, cause it to reveal its treasures, and enable mankind to benefit therefrom.” Gleanings From the Writings of Bahá’u’lláh, pp. 259-260

Seems that the Bible does agree about a GREAT future unfolding.
Years ago I remember a person referring to Jesus' coming future millennial reign over Earth as 'Golden'.
The future to be Great or Golden because there is coming ' healing ' for earth's nations as per Revelation 22:2.
This is a reason why the Bible invites all of us to pray the invitation of Rev. 22:20 for Jesus to come !
Come and undo all the damage brought upon humanity:
* No one will say, " I am sick...." - Isaiah 33:24
* Earth and its people will be happy-and-healthy as described in Isaiah 35th chapter.
* There will be enjoyable work for everyone - Isaiah 65:21-23
* Animal kind will be at peace with mankind - Isaiah 65:25; Isaiah 11:6-9
* Wars will cease world wide - Psalms 46:9
Jesus will have subjects or citizens on Earth from sea to sea / earth wide - Psalms 72:8, Psalms 72:12-14

I knew what you were referring to. My comments, as to Tony, were a bit hasty since I was about to log off. The issue with your faith is that it still has the elements of arrogance in being 'the right one' (like all the others) and of having the issue of 'false prophets' (and many, like me, will never accept this just because they announce such), and where the control seems not to be in the hands of the people but some hierarchy, that obviously being God. So everything is fine as long as everyone accepts your version of God. Sorry, I can't see this happening, but I can see us realising that we need to work together as humans despite our differences as to religious beliefs or not - as long as those who are religious just drop some of their more outlandish claims - as to being 'the way'. Might not happen, but most other scenarios envisaged by the various faiths won't happen either.

When you say "our version of God" I guess you mean the Abrahamic God.
Yes, that is the God we believe in, but we do not reject those who believe in other Gods or nonbelievers.
Baha'is do not believe we are the "right one" because we believe that all religions are right, and we are the ONLY major religion with that belief.
We only believe that we are the most current religion and the religion that has what humanity needs in this age.... If you consider that arrogant so be it, but we have to say that because it is part of the message of Baha'u'llah.

The most arrogant religion in the world is Christianity because they believe that Jesus is the Only Way and that they are the Only True Religion. Judaism also believes that are the only true religion since they believe that the Torah is the only scripture that is valid. Baha'is by contrast believe all the scriptures are valid and true.

Baha'is believe that we need to work together as humans despite our differences as to religious beliefs or not, and that is undeniable since Baha'u'llah wrote it in His Own Pen.

“Through each and every one of the verses which the Pen of the Most High hath revealed, the doors of love and unity have been unlocked and flung open to the face of men. We have erewhile declared—and Our Word is the truth—: “Consort with the followers of all religions in a spirit of friendliness and fellowship.” Whatsoever hath led the children of men to shun one another, and hath caused dissensions and divisions amongst them, hath, through the revelation of these words, been nullified and abolished. From the heaven of God’s Will, and for the purpose of ennobling the world of being and of elevating the minds and souls of men, hath been sent down that which is the most effective instrument for the education of the whole human race.”

Gleanings From the Writings of Bahá’u’lláh, p. 95

“The second Taráz is to consort with the followers of all religions in a spirit of friendliness and fellowship, to proclaim that which the Speaker on Sinai hath set forth and to observe fairness in all matters.

They that are endued with sincerity and faithfulness should associate with all the peoples and kindreds of the earth with joy and radiance, inasmuch as consorting with people hath promoted and will continue to promote unity and concord, which in turn are conducive to the maintenance of order in the world and to the regeneration of nations. Blessed are such as hold fast to the cord of kindliness and tender mercy and are free from animosity and hatred.” Tablets of Bahá’u’lláh, pp. 35-36

I have learned quite a lot from RF but its not made me religious, on the contrary, it's makes me realise i made the correct choice to leave religion behind, I can't speak for others though.
I'm with you on this. So many arguments made so poorly, or so incoherently, or both, so often from the theistic side. If am ever found to be perpetrating such in the name of something so similarly flimsy... ugh. I don't even want to think about it, honestly.

Well I still think that many will have an issue with revealed faiths via humans no matter where it seems to come from, so either God hasn't found the best method of imparting whatever we need or we are being severely over-estimated as to our abilities - given that all earlier faiths mostly have conflicted with each other. So would we believe any or all of them?

I think that it is the people in the religions that have conflicted with each other, not the religions themselves. It is true that all religions are all different in some ways but they are more alike than different and the spiritual teachings are essentially the same. The problem is that most people don't realize that because they are so focused on the differences.

The fact that so many faiths - probably all - have split into various factions must indicate something - perhaps that imparting divine messages to humans via any human messenger is just an inadequate method of doing so.

I think the young generation has just had it with competing religions. The world has grown smaller and they are exposed to too many competing claims for comfort and they are casting it all off in favor of being nones for the most part.

I think that they will opt for an individualistic spirituality with a belief in God and being a good person, with maybe a few ad hoc beliefs tagged on, such as reincarnation, or angels, or whatever ese toots their personal horn. But step into a church? Not for them.

What that indicates is that the Messenger of God who revealed those religions did not make a Covenant with His followers, so the followers had no continued guidance after the Messenger died, and as a result they went every which way and split off into many factions. Another reason for the many factions is because there was no appointed interpreter so they disagreed as to what the scriptures meant.

That is not a problem in the Baha'i Faith because Baha'u'llah had a written Covenant spelling everything out so there would not be any disagreements between the Baha'is after He died, and there would be no question as to where the authority would reside within the Faith. One central authority has prevented the Baha'i Faith from splitting off into factions as happened with all the other religions. Baha'u'llah also appointed interpreters of His Writings so that there would be no question as to what they meant.

Bahá’u’lláh and His Covenant

It has been written that the reason there was no written Covenant in the older religions is because the followers were not spiritually advanced enough to keep a Covenant.

You can make any kind of future you want to depending upon what verses you pick and how you interpret those verses.
The fact that all Christians read the same Bible yet all Christians do not believe what you believe is proof of that.
How do you explain this phenomenon?
To me this phenomenon is expressed in Scripture because ALL are Not true Christians.
Jesus gave us the illustration about genuine ' wheat ' Christians and fake ' weed/tares' Christians - Matthew 13:24-30
Gospel writer Luke informs us at Acts of the Apostles 20:29-30 that after the apostles would be off the scene that false clergy would try to fleece the Flock of God.
The 'genuine and the fake' would both grow together until the Harvest Time or the soon coming Time of Separation on Earth as found at Matthew 25:31-33,37.

Yes, which verses you look at how you interpret them.
Because the Bible is Not written in alphabetical order as a dictionary is, we need to look at the Bible by subject or topic arrangement.
This way we can we can see or view that the corresponding cross-reference verses or passages do match.
Jesus often prefaced his statements with the words, " It is written....." meaning already written down in the the OT.
Jesus used logical reasoning on those old Hebrew Scriptures as the basis for his teachings matching and explaining or expounding them for us.
False clergy often use 'church' traditions or customs teaching them as Scripture but are Not Scripture.
That does Not make Scripture as wrong, but makes their fake and false teachings as wrong.
So, yes it can be how one views. How Hungry, Humble, Honest a person is with themselves and with Scripture.
How hungry a person is for spiritual food.
How humble a person is in willing to learn.
How honest a person is in having an 'inquiring mind that wants to honestly know' when Scripture is read.

To me, this is where Jesus, his teachings, enters into the picture because Jesus was Not just any human messenger but God's Son whose imparting messages for us match from the old Hebrew Scriptures.
