That is similar to the story of the Christ sacrifice.... Something had to be sacrificed so something else could grow.
I believe that for spiritual growth worldly things must be sacrificed, and that just reminded me of these verses:

John 12:24-25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.

Speaking of cornfields, I remember the large cornfields from when I lived in Indiana, I always liked the cornfields. We do not have many here, just a few small ones which bring back memories.

Yeah, sacrifice is necessary for growth in most avenues in life... its a good reminder of such.

I never minded the cornfields until I spent some time in a prairie... and then I felt saddened that they're largely gone. I also feel saddened that so little of Iowa corn is used for human consumption; just ethanol and feeding beef(which doesn't bring out much comfort in a vegetarian). It would be easier to take if I knew people were eating it at a greater rate...

Another things that's depressing in parts of the country: we're losing our ash trees.

Though what you see on the tree are the marks of a woodpecker, the problem goes deeper than that, literally. Inside is the emerald ash borer, which has invaded the area and is killing our ash trees. We had to have one removed in our old home. :(
