Songs from your childhood. Which ones are still your favorites?

I recently rewatched the Woodstock movie. I wonder if the film makers realised at the time what a fascinating social document they were creating? Some great performances too, of course, but the real stars of the movie were the audience.

One brief interview really stood out for me; a middle aged guy who’d come to deliver or remove the portaloos, told the film crew “I’ve got two sons. One’s in Vietnam and the other’s at this festival somewhere”.

I’ve wondered ever since, what happened to those two young men and their dad.

I didn't really listen to music until my teens. I grew up in the UK during the 90's which meant that nearly every song I encountered was from a girl or boy band. The country was obsessed with them so I thought I just didn't like music. I didn't realise that I was missing out on some great songs until I was in high school.

Admittedly, a lot of what I listened to in my teens isn't stuff I usually listen to now. I loved Marilyn Manson back then for example but I can pretty much take or leave him now. There are a few songs I still listen to from time to time though:

This song was memorable for me as a kid. The CB radio fad was in full swing, and my dad took my brother and me on a memorable trip across country in a Winnebago, with this song coming up on the radio quite frequently. We also had a CB and got into a few convoys of our own. My dad knew all the slang and was able to translate for us.

I remember this song was played a lot when I was about 8 or 9.


At the time, I didn't really know (or even care) what it was about, but as it was constantly played on the radio at the time, I would try to sing along with it. But due to my mishearing of the lyrics, I thought it was "You're so lame," not "You're so vain." This amused my older brother to the point that he still brings it up occasionally.

Here's one from about the same time. It wasn't really a "favorite," but it was another song that got played frequently on the radio for a while. Didn't seem to have much staying power, though. Whenever people look back on some of the great music of the early 70s, this would not be one of the top picks.

I forgot about the ol' trucker songs. In grade school, I wanted to be a big rig driver.

One of my favorites...
