This was a put a finger down challenge someone else did on Tiktok but I don't know who the original person who did it was but a lot of people copied them.Still it illustrates my point. Just know this finger down challenge here is not something I came up with
Hold your fingers up and...
1.Put a finger down if you believe one should strive to act with compassion and empathy toward all creatures in accordance with reason.
2.If you believe the struggle for justice is an ongoing and necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions.
3.If you believe one’s body is inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone.
4.If you believe the freedoms of others should be respected, including the freedom to offend. To willfully and unjustly encroach upon the freedoms of another is to forgo one's own.
5.If you believe beliefs should conform to one's best scientific understanding of the world. One should take care never to distort scientific facts to fit one's beliefs.
6.If you believe people are fallible. If one makes a mistake, one should do one's best to rectify it and resolve any harm that might have been caused.
7. And if you believe the spirit of compassion, wisdom, and justice should always prevail over the written or spoken word.

If you agree with these they are the 7 Tenets of The Satanic Temple found here: THERE ARE SEVEN FUNDAMENTAL TENETS

My point in having you do this?
Don't judge a religion unless you've actually studied it.

@RayofLight I think you've given us a fantastic illustration in your OP, of the need to be ever mindful against judging a 'book by its cover' but rather seeking earnestly to 'understand first, judge second'.

The Temple of Satan is a particularly arresting example of this, given that it is a recent religious movement (founded in 2013, I believe, as a schism from LeVayan Satanism) which is nontheistic and uses the archetype of Satan and satanic symbology - as the eternal 'rebel' against coercive authority and established norms - to argue for egalitarianism, religious liberty and many other of the values espoused above.

I also am a firm believer of the sixth tenet which is a significant reason for me to be cautious of social justice movements like theirs.

I believe I only agreed with 1,2 and 6. I bet that is only the tp of the iceberg.

I don't like the name, since it freaks out my relatives. They'd think I was mental or worse. One or two might drop dead if I got involved.

It looks aimed at school kids, having read some of the stuff on the link. Personally I don't need advice on how to persuade my parents of anything. The tenets seem worthy, but the imagery is all a bit too teen goth horror schlock for an old git like me.

Why it is called Satanic temple?
See post number 8. They do not worship satan but see him as a symbol for freedom among other things. Their view of Satan differs from Christianity. Satan is important in their faith.

Mine already freaked out when they found out I was a pagan witch...if I became a Satanist they'd really freak! However I've considered it and still looking into it.

It's a very respectable religion. It's dark in some ways but dark isn't necessarily a bad thing. Not really goth either as goth is about music. And most Goths are that way past adulthood. It just has a very different view on Satan. Therefore a lot of people see it as dark. I understand where you are coming from tho.

Maybe goth was a wrong word then. I'm not really criticising it, I applaud some of the stuff I read on the link. But the after school club and writing about bad teachers seems pretty focussed on the young (no bad thing, just my perception). Still think the imagery is cheesy
