Namaste,

I went to Youtube to search for a certain guru's regular Thursday livestream and found out that it is Shivaratri. Wishing you a nice holiday.:praying::purpleheart:

Nataraj, Nataraja, Jai Shiva Shankara Nataraja.
Shivaraj, Shivaraja, Shambho Shankara Shivaraja.

I've been watching the Sadhguru live stream for the last four hours.

Are there any special customs related to Shivaratri?
I think staying up all night is common everywhere. But like everything else Hindu, there are tremendous regional differences. Some will focus on singing, others on a continuous Lingam abhishekham etc. This affects answers greatly as some folks who haven't gotten around much just naturally assume that their version of Hinduism is THE version. At the temple I go to, some folks from anotheer regional part of India, got up and left, because 'we weren't doing it right.'

It is one of the times when there is a greater mix of all the cultures, though.

But the good thing about where I live is I can stay up all night IST and not miss a wink's sleep.

I stayed up all night all day yesterday. :D

Jaya Jagannatha!
Happy belated Shivaratri. Just noticed this thread. I did upvas with just water the whole day yesterday and tried my best to not sleep. But my head felt very heavy later in the evening and I could not stay awake. I feel bad. But the fasting was strictly kept and I broke it only this morning after daybreak.

Om Namah Shivaya

Off topic but ... I've always found it curious how breakfast has morphed into a single word about a meal, rather than the original compound word it was ... break fast.

Happy Sivaratri to you to.

Sivaratri is both a celebration and an austere reflective time. It seems odd to say 'happy' for the austerity bit, but for the festival part, sure, 'happy' is apt.

I (and other people also) have mentioned quite a funny tradition that Kashmiris celebrate the night before Shivratri - they call it Herat (that is only the local pronunciation of Shivratri). But that is held at the house of the eldest person in a extended family. Since my uncle was elder to my father, this is held at his son's house, though my cousin brother is younger than me. My cousin pips me in the line of succession.
